I’ll be sharing my best resume tips to help you land your dream remote job! These tips helped me get 10 first round interviews last summer. Your resume is the first impression companies will get of you so you want to make sure it stands out!

As someone who has been on the other side as well, there are a few simple mistakes people make that can result in your resume being tossed aside. There are also simple tweaks you can make to ensure your resume stands out among the crowds! I feel like there are so many templates out there that basically look the same and are honestly pretty boring.

This is the first part of my resume. It’s where I list out my qualities that make me stand out among other candidates. For example, I include the fact that I passed all 4 sections of the CPA exam on the first try within 7 months. So while other applicants may also have their CPA, this is an additional detail that differentiates me from the other applicants.

2. Use numbers to quantify your impact in your role(s)

As someone looking to hire a new employee, I want to know what impact they had in their previous and current roles. For example, if you are a Social Media Manager, how quickly did you grow the account(s) you were in charge of? If it was 200% over 3 months, add that into your resume! Did you grow 5 accounts to 100k followers over the course of your time there?

Any impact you can quantify in numbers, be sure to put this in your resume. I was a Manager in my previous role, and included how many people I managed on my team. This helps the interviewers visualize what you could do to improve their company as well!

3. Make sure all your verb tenses are consistent

Make sure that all of your bullet points for your job descriptions use the same verb tense, whether it is past or present. I put all of mine in past tense, even for my current role: “I managed,” “I implemented,” “Reviewed and prepared,” etc. 

I have seen resumes that mix and match tenses and while it’s not a huge deal, it is harder to follow and looks less professional. This will also make it easier for you to write out your bullet points and require less thinking since it will all be consistent.

4. Run spellcheck

This one should be self explanatory but you would be surprised how many small spelling errors I see from time to time! I also recommend having someone read it over for grammar in case Word missed something.

5. Have a parent, friend, mentor read it over

Along with having someone check it for grammar, getting a second opinion can provide feedback on other things you may have missed. Make sure it’s someone whose opinion you trust and value, so any feedback they do provide is thoughtful and helpful, and you are open to incorporating it.
