Channel Islands National Park: 11 Things You Need To Know Before You Go

If you’re not convinced that California is the best state, then visiting Channel Islands National Park will definitely seal the deal for you. This national park is so stunning with its limestone cliffs, turquoise blue waters, and scenic hiking trails.

It’s located in between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, and can easily be done as a day trip from either place.

I lived in Los Angeles for over 10 years, not ever knowing that Channel Islands National Park was so close! So I wanted to share everything you need to know about Channel Islands National Park before you go.

1. How to get to Channel Islands National Park

Firstly, Channel Islands National Park is comprised of 5 different islands: Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara Islands.

Anacapa and Santa Cruz islands are the most accessible, with year-round ferry service, and have the most to do for a day trip. I went to Scorpion Cove on Santa Cruz island for a day trip and had the best time.

To get to Channel Islands National Park, you’ll need to book your roundtrip boat tickets with Island Packers Cruises. Boats depart from two different harbors: Ventura Harbor and the Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard.

2. Reservations are required to visit

Because of the limited number of ferry spots, reservations are required to visit Channel Islands National Park. However, you don’t need to make a separate reservation with the park – just the boat tickets.

Make sure to make your reservations in advance! Since you have to book both your departure and return trip, spots can fill up quickly if you’re just looking to day trip.

3. You can take just a day trip or camp overnight

Day trips are the more popular option to visit the islands, but you can also choose to camp overnight to really maximize your time in Channel Islands National Park.

Make sure to read through all of the guidelines so you know what to pack and bring with you, and what’s not allowed.

4. Ferries can be canceled due to weather or rough seas

Definitely be aware that in the winter/spring (December – May) you could end up having to spend an extra night or two on the islands due to changing weather conditions.

There are bulletin boards on the islands that will be updated with the most up-to-date information regarding island pick-up times.

If you’re camping overnight, make sure you pack extra food and water, as there will not be places on the islands to purchase any.

5. There are no shops or restaurants on the islands

While there are visitor centers that may or may not be staffed, there are no shops, businesses, restaurants, etc on the islands. Whether you’re day tripping or camping overnight, make sure you pack the essentials and bring lots of food and water.

There are local restaurants by the harbors on the mainland that allow you to pre-order a bagged lunch. This is a great option if you don’t want to pack your own picnic lunch. I ordered lunch from Harbor Cove Cafe.

Additionally, there are no trash cans so everything you bring with you to the islands, you must carry back out with you.

6. There are pit toilets on the islands

Santa Rosa Island has flushing toilets and running water, but all the other islands have pit toilets. The good news is, you will be able to the bathroom on whichever island you choose.

7. There is minimal cell coverage

I’ve found this to be common in most US National Parks, but there is not much cell coverage throughout Channel Islands National Park. I did randomly find pockets of cell reception while on the Potato Harbor Trail, but it was slow and unreliable.

I recommend downloading Offline Google Maps or AllTrails before you go so that you’ll be able to access the hiking trails and maps even when you lose cell coverage.

8. There are 30 hiking trails throughout Channel Islands National Park

Although it may seem like the islands are small, there are so many incredible hikes you can go on to explore Channel Islands National Park! The most popular one is Potato Harbor, which you can easily hike on a day trip to Scorpion Cove (Santa Cruz Island).

9. There are barely any shaded or covered areas

This is something to keep in mind when planning your outfit and what to pack for Channel Islands National Park. I found that there were very few shaded areas throughout the island and I had to reapply my sunscreen often.

Definitely make sure you bring a hat, and lots of water to stay hydrated.

10. You can spot lots of native wildlife

Being able to see all of the wildlife is a major reason why you should visit Channel Islands National Park! On our ferry ride over to Scorpion Cove, we saw tons of dolphins swimming around and even a humpback whale.🤯

On the islands themselves, you can spot native wildlife like the island fox, island deer mouse, harvest mouse and spotted skunk. You can also see bald eagles flying around in the sky; although I unfortunately did not see one of these, how cool is that!

Make sure you have your camera ready to snap a pic of the wildlife!

11. Kayaks and snorkel gear are available to rent

On Santa Cruz Island, you can rent a kayak to paddle in the ocean waters at either Scorpion Anchorage or Prisoners Harbor. You may also bring your own kayak out to the islands.

Make sure to reserve a kayak in advance – there’s a limited number each day and the team needs to know how many kayaks to bring out to the island.

Best Affordable Hotels in Los Angeles With A Gym

When choosing a hotel in a city like Los Angeles, the options can really feel overwhelming. There are so many different neighborhoods and sights to explore!

Having lived here for 10+ years, I wanted to share my favorite affordable hotels in Los Angeles with a gym / fitness center; one of my favorite perks when I go to book a hotel.

I see so many people visit Los Angeles and end up feeling disappointed because they didn’t realize how much their location really matters. For purposes of this blog post, “affordable hotels” means a budget of $300/night, or less.

If you’re on a tighter budget than that, I would recommend visiting LA with a friend to split costs. However, I’ve also included a number of hostels in good areas that will be a more budget-friendly option.

I’ve organized the hotels by neighborhood, and from there you can decide which neighborhood makes the most sense for your trip!

Where to stay in Los Angeles

Where to stay in Los Angeles really depends on 3 major factors: what you want to see, whether or not you’ll be renting a car, and how much time you’re willing to spend waiting in traffic.

Before deciding where to stay in Los Angeles, map out the top places you want to see. I would suggest choosing the neighborhood that’s closest to the majority of them to save yourself a ton of time and frustration.

Traffic can make getting around Los Angeles pretty tough, and unfortunately, our public transportation is not yet at the level of other cities like Paris, New York City, Chicago, etc. Planning your stay around the attractions you want to see most is essential to actually enjoying your time here!

I’ll go through the top 8 neighborhoods to visit, and share my opinion and my favorite affordable hotels in Los Angeles.

Miracle Mile / Beverly Grove

My overall pick without knowing exactly where you want to go or what you want to do is Miracle Mile / Beverly Grove. It’s centrally located so assuming the things you want to do are all spread out, this is a great spot to be.

I actually lived here for 3 years after graduating college and absolutely loved it. There’s lots of museums, attractions and fun things to do in this area!

If you want to take one of the most popular tours in LA:

Short Stories Hotel

Right across from The Grove, Short Stories is a super cute boutique hotel with a modern, laid-back vibe. The rooms are stylish and cozy, and there’s a beautiful little courtyard with a pool.

While they do not have a fitness center on site, they have a partnership with a neighborhood gym you can take advantage of to workout on vacation.

It’s a great spot if you want to be walking distance to shopping, food, and museums without staying in a huge chain hotel.

Palihouse West Hollywood

This Palihouse is a charming boutique hotel – think European-inspired design and rooms that feel more like apartments. It’s located on 3rd street – which is the cutest little street lined with great shops, bakeries and restaurants!

This is the perfect spot if you want something stylish and a little different from your typical hotel stay. Plus the social pool-bar is such a fun bonus.

SLS Hotel

If you’re looking for something more luxe and upscale, SLS is a vibe. The rooms are modern and moody, there’s a rooftop pool with city views, and it’s close to great shopping at the Beverly Center and the Grove, and lots of restaurants.

This one is definitely on the higher end, but perfect if you’re able to spend a bit more.

Downtown Los Angeles

Downtown LA is not my top choice for your stay; it is far from the beach (an hour+ drive in traffic) and unfortunately not the safest neighborhood. However, you can also find some of the most affordable hotels in Los Angeles downtown.

If you’re planning to go to sporting events or a concert at Crypto.com Arena, this is the spot to be! Check out the upcoming events at Crypto.com Arena:

Freehand Los Angeles

The Freehand is a super stylish, budget-friendly option with both private rooms and shared dorms. The rooftop pool and bar (Broken Shaker) has amazing city views, and they even offer free breakfast in the shared rooms.

It’s a great pick if you want something fun, social, and well-designed without breaking the bank.

Omni Los Angeles Hotel at California Plaza

Located on Bunker Hill, the Omni will give you that luxury hotel feel without the price tag. They have a two-story art-filled atrium lobby, heated lap pool, 24/7 gym, spa, and two on-site restaurants – Grand Café and Noé Restaurant & Bar

It’s a solid pick if you’re looking for easy access to The Broad, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Grand Central Market, and other iconic downtown spots.

Los Angeles Athletic Club

Right in the heart of DTLA, this historic hotel doubles as a full-fledged fitness and social club. It’s got an 88,000 sq ft athletic club (think lap pool, basketball, racquetball, spa, sauna, steam room, and more), it’s way more than just a place to crash.

It’s perfect for fitness lovers, business travelers, and anyone into old‑school charm with modern comforts.

Santa Monica

If you want to be close to the beach and iconic spots like the Santa Monica Pier, you’re probably thinking of staying in Santa Monica. Location-wise, I think it’s really well positioned, and is also really close to Malibu which is great for day trips!

However, to be totally transparent, in the last few years I’ve noticed myself feeling a little more sketched out when I’m alone in Santa Monica. I don’t think it’s necessarily unsafe, but something to be aware of, especially if you’re a female solo traveler.

You may see un-homed individuals around – they are usually harmless but because of this I would also recommend staying in a nicer hotel that has a front desk / security.

Therefore, you may have less options on a budget in Santa Monica.

If you are staying in Santa Monica, and want to explore Hollywood without a car, I recommend doing this LA Tour – it’s a great way to see all the sights without having to worry about finding parking or figuring out where to go.

Ocean View Hotel

Right across from the beach and Santa Monica Pier, this is a clean, modern spot with some rooms having an ocean view balcony. It’s walkable to everything and they even give you a free day pass to a nearby gym.

No pool, but the location totally makes up for it.

Shore Hotel

Right on Ocean Ave, just steps from the beach, pier, and Third‑Street Promenade, this eco‑friendly, boutique hotel is a really good option.

They’ve got a heated, solar‑powered pool with cabanas, a 24‑hour gym included, plus complimentary gym passes to Anytime Fitness/John Reed. Most rooms have private balconies/patios, and you can also splurge to get an ocean view.

This is great if you want to be steps from the sand with pool, gym, and ocean views.

Venice Beach / Marina del Rey

If you’re feeling iffy about Santa Monica but want your beach vacation and to be able to walk to the beach in literally 5 minutes – I would highly recommend Venice Beach / Marina del Rey area.

This is right below Santa Monica and you’ll find a lot more local spots on Pacific Ave and Abbott Kinney, plus must-see spots like the Venice Canals. If you’re a big foodie, I recommend checking out this Venice walking food tour:

Please keep in mind that it is still common to see a lot of un-homed individuals here as well, but with all of the pedestrian foot traffic I personally don’t feel unsafe here.

Hotel Erwin

Right on Pacific Ave just steps from the Venice boardwalk, Hotel Erwin nails that Venice vibe. Rooms have ocean-view balconies and retro ’70s flair, and you get free Gold’s Gym passes and beach cruiser bikes.

This is a great pick – especially for that perfect rooftop sunset IG photo at their High Rooftop Lounge! I actually stayed here a few years ago for New Years Eve and loved it.

Marina del Rey Marriott

The Marina del Rey Marriott is a laid-back, coastal hotel – just a few blocks from Venice Beach and right on the marina. You’ll get a heated pool, 24/7 gym, waterfront cabanas, and an on-site restaurant, Sinder Lounge.

Rooms are modern with marina or ocean views, and the location’s perfect if you want beach time but also want to be close by LAX.

In short: comfy, convenient, and great for mixing beach chill with easy access to Venice, the airport, and dining by the water.

The Kinney Venice Beach

The Kinney is a fun, artsy hotel about a mile from the beach and right next to Abbott Kinney, a street lined with boutique shops, restaurants, coffee shops and more. There are beach cruisers you can rent onsite or public transit and bike-share options nearby, making the beach just a quick ride away.

The hotel has a playful courtyard with ping-pong, a small pool and hot tub, plus a chill breakfast lounge serving acai bowls and coffee. Definitely pick an interior room if you want it a bit quieter.

Hollywood

Hollywood is a another great option if you want to be centrally located! There are so many iconic sights located right around here like the Griffith Observatory, Hollyhock House, Walk of Fame and more.

However, it is probably not going to look like how you picture it looking from the movies. I remember the first time I visited being so caught off guard because I imagined celebrities everywhere and it was definitely not like that haha.

Some of my favorite tour options to optimize your time around Hollywood:

The Hollywood Roosevelt

This iconic hotel is right on Hollywood Blvd and packed with old-school charm – Marilyn Monroe even lived here! The pool is gorgeous, the vibe is classic-meets-cool, and you’re walking distance to the Walk of Fame and theaters.

Great if you want a historic stay with a fun, lively atmosphere.

Loews Hollywood Hotel

The Loews Hollywood Hotel is smack dab in the middle of Hollywood. It’s super convenient if you want to be right by the Walk of Fame, theaters, and public transit.

Rooms are modern and some even have views of the Hollywood Sign. It’s great if you’re looking for an easy, polished stay in the middle of all the action!

LAX/Airport

If you’re only spending a day or two in Los Angeles, or if you’re coming specifically for an event at SoFi Stadium then staying right by the LAX airport is a great idea. There are a ton of affordable hotels in Los Angeles located right around the airport.

Most airport hotels have free shuttles to and from LAX (make sure to confirm on their website before booking though).

However, there is not a ton to do in this area so you will probably find yourself spending extra time driving around, if you’re planning to explore more of Los Angeles.

Hotel June

Hotel June is a cool, modern hotel that’s super close to LAX, Venice, and the beach. The vibe is chill and design-y, with a cute pool area, a solid gym, and a fun restaurant right by the water.

It’s ideal if you want that boutique-hotel vibe with solid amenities, a killer location, and no airport feels, even though you’re right next to LAX.

AC Hotel Los Angeles South Bay

The AC Hotel is modern, clean, and super close to LAX and SoFi Stadium. The rooms are sleek and simple, there’s a rooftop bar with great views, and it’s an easy drive to the beach.

Great spot if you want something stylish near the airport without feeling like you’re staying at the airport.

westdrift Manhattan Beach

Okay so this one is a little more south, but it’s a stylish coastal hotel that is really great for relaxing. It’s about a mile from the sand but right on a golf course (you can rent clubs), and they’ve got bikers covered too with on-site racks.

The pool scene is great (cabanas included), there’s pickleball, a solid gym, and a cool indoor-outdoor restaurant (JUTE) for local eats and cocktails. I actually did a staycation here and really loved it – the room views are great and you’re walking distance from a ton of restaurants and shops!

Los Feliz / Silver Lake

Los Feliz, Echo Park and Silver Lake is one of the most underrated, trendiest pockets in Los Angeles. I unfortunately don’t get there as much as I’d like to since I live on the Westside, but have an amazing time every time I’m out there!

There’s a lot of great attractions close by like Echo Park Lake, Dodger Stadium, the Hollyhock House and Griffith Observatory. Make sure to go on a Swan Boat in Echo Park Lake when you’re out here:

Unfortunately, there are not many options when it comes to a nice, highly rated hotel that also has a gym. I’ve included my favorite option which does not have a gym, but it does have a rooftop pool and is a great option if you want to stay in Los Feliz.

Cara Hotel

Tucked near Griffith Park, Cara is calm, stylish, and full of charm. The rooms open onto a dreamy courtyard with a pool, and the restaurant is so good, even locals go.

It’s perfect if you want something peaceful, design-forward, and a little more hidden-gem than scene. But please remember – this is the only hotel on this list that does not have a gym 🙁

Culver City

Culver City is a neighborhood that’s also in the middle (ish) of Los Angeles, but has easier access to the beach than Hollywood or Beverly Hills does.

There’s a lot of great restaurants, cafes, and shops in this area, as well as the Culver City Stairs – a workout that’s sure to get your heart pumping.

The Shay

Trendy and super well-located, The Shay has a rooftop pool, great vibes, and easy access to the Metro if you don’t want to drive. The rooms are modern and comfy, and the whole place feels social without being too busy.

This is a great spot for exploring the Westside or bouncing between DTLA and the beach.

The Culver Hotel

This historic hotel in downtown Culver City is full of charm and feels like a step back in time, but with modern touches. It’s definitely a little pricier, but the location is amazing, the vibe is super cool, and they even have live jazz in the lobby.

It’s a great pick if you’re down to splurge a bit for something special.

Whether you’re celebrating the month of love, or simply chasing Barbie-themed vibes, these pink places in Los Angeles are verified Instagram-worthy.

The majority of the spots are located around the Beverly Hills / West Hollywood area, so you could definitely plan a whole day of stopping by each spot. You’ll see cafes, restaurants, dessert shops and more.

1. Paul Smith Pink Wall

Starting strong with the ICONIC pink wall on Melrose. On weekends you may have to wait in a line to get your own photo in front of the wall, but honestly I feel like it’s worth it.

PSA – you are not allowed to park in Paul Smith’s parking lot unless you are shopping there! However, there is tons of street parking around – just make sure to double check the signs and pay your meter.

2. LoveShackFancy

This is the cutest boutique shop that is decorated in all things pink from floor to ceiling. Coming into this store makes me so happy and is an essential stop on the pink places tour.

Especially right now for Valentine’s Day, they have the cutest pink sweaters, pink dresses, pink skirts and more!

3. Mia Becar Wall Mural

Right around the corner from LoveShackFancy down an alley off of La Cienega Blvd is this pink heart mural painted on the side of a wall by the Mia Becar shoe store.

This is a really cute mural that I found randomly and I think it deserves a spot on the list of pink places!

4. Beverly Hills Hotel

The iconic Beverly Hills Hotel is a cute, historic hotel with pink exterior, and pink accents all throughout the hotel.

You can explore the hotel without a reservation, or grab lunch at The Cabana Cafe, a popular poolside restaurant.

5. Sprinkles Beverly Hills ATM

Make sure to stop by the Sprinkles ATM in Beverly Hills for a cupcake and a pic with their pink ATM exterior!

6. Alfred Coffee

There are lots of Alfred Coffee locations throughout Los Angeles, but the Glossier Alley location is the one with this pink “But First, Coffee” wall.

For the full pink experience, make sure you order a Pink Drink! They have their classic drink – the non-caffeinated strawberry and raspberry drink, blended with vanilla, cinnamon, and milk.

And they ALSO have a special Glossier x Alfred Pink Iced Latte that blends raspberries, strawberries, and vanilla with their Espresso and milk. You can’t go wrong with either option.

7. Trejo's Coffee & Donuts

Glossier is a popular cosmetics store, with a very pink location on Melrose in West Hollywood! The display tables and decor inside are pink as well.

Looking for the best day trips from Los Angeles to escape the hustle and bustle of the city? Or perhaps looking for new spots to add to your Southern California bucket list? You’ve come to the right spot!

Los Angeles is perfectly positioned for a variety of incredible day trips that can cater to a wide range of interests, from beach outings to mountain hikes, and even cultural excursions. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, these day trips offer a refreshing change of pace and scenery.

Below, I’ll be sharing eight fantastic day trips from Los Angeles, all within a five-hour drive, so you can easily plan your perfect day. And if you find yourself wanting more time to explore, you can easily turn these into weekend getaways.

Top Day Trips From Los Angeles

1. Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is about two hours north of Los Angeles and is an amazing beach town that offers a little bit of everything for visitors. Whether you’re looking for an adventure-filled weekend or a relaxing day trip from Los Angeles, Santa Barbara has it all.

Things to do in Santa Barbara

Wine tasting: Santa Ynez Valley, just a short drive away, is home to many vineyards. Even if you’re not a wine enthusiast, the scenic drives and beautiful vineyard landscapes are worth the trip. You could definitely also plan multiple day trips from Los Angeles to all of Santa Barbara’s surrounding neighborhoods.
Sight Seeing: I suggest exploring the historic Mission Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara County Courthouse, and structures like the Chromatic Gate, featured above!
The Funk Zone: This vibrant neighborhood is filled with trendy boutiques, art galleries, restaurants and breweries. Brewery hopping in the Funk Zone is a popular activity, with many spots offering unique craft beers and lively atmospheres.
Beaches: For relaxing day trips from Los Angeles, head to one of Santa Barbara’s many beautiful beaches. East Beach and Butterfly Beach are popular spots, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or going for a bike ride along the beach.

2. Catalina Island

A little over an hour by ferry from Long Beach, Catalina Island offers a peaceful escape with activities such as snorkeling, zip-lining, and exploring the quaint town of Avalon. I suggest reserving the earliest ferry possible, to make the most of your day trips from Los Angeles to Catalina Island.

Although I personally have not been here yet, it’s high on my bucket list and reminds me a lot of little European towns! Does this not look like a place you’d see in Italy?!

Things to do on Catalina Island

Explore Avalon: Take an island adventure tour to get the most out of your time there! You’ll get to see the stunning canyon views, scenic coastline, and countryside that reminds me of Italy. I feel like it would never get old coming here on day trips from Los Angeles.
Snorkeling and Scuba Diving: Catalina Island is also known for its clear blue waters and marine life, making it a great spot for snorkeling and scuba diving. Casino Point is a popular location, and if you’re new to diving, several local operators offer beginner lessons and guided tours.
Zip Line Eco Tour: I have also heard great things about the Zip Line Eco Tour! This is a two hour adventure, where you’ll be 600 feet above the Descanso Beach Club. From this vantage point, you’ll get breathtaking ocean views as you zigzag down and across the canyon, through towering eucalyptus trees, reaching speeds of up to 35 mph! You can learn more here.

3. Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree is perfect if you’re looking for a desert oasis escape. It’s about 2 hours east of Los Angeles, and right next to Palm Springs! (Which should also be included in the best day trips from Los Angeles, but I am excluding it from this list since you could do both in one day).

To maximize your time there, I recommend downloading the Self-Driving Audio Tour in advance. It’s a great way to learn the about the different areas in the park, and also discover which hikes you want to do. Just make sure to download it ahead of time – there is minimal Wi-Fi and cellular service in the National Park!

Also, before I went, I didn’t realize a “Joshua Tree” was a type of tree that is literally all over the place in the national park. I thought it was like one singular tree.😂 You can see a couple of them in the first photo:

Things to do in Joshua Tree

Hiking: Popular hikes include the Hidden Valley Trail, which is a 1-mile loop through a scenic rock-enclosed valley, and the Barker Dam Trail, a 1.3-mile loop that takes you to a historic dam and small reservoir. For something more challenging, the Ryan Mountain Trail provides stunning panoramic views of the park from its 5,457-foot summit.
Rock Climbing: There are thousands of climbing routes, ranging from beginner-friendly bouldering to advanced multi-pitch climbs. There are also massive rock formations, such as Intersection Rock and Echo Cove, that are popular spots for climbers.
Stargazing: My favorite activity in Joshua Tree is stargazing! The park is recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, which means it has some of the clearest and darkest night skies in Southern California. The lack of light pollution makes it an ideal location for observing stars, planets, and meteor showers. Keys View and the Cholla Cactus Garden are particularly great spots to set up your camera and/or telescope for viewing.

The sunsets are UNREAL, especially if you go during the fall or winter seasons. Joshua Tree is one of the best day trips from Los Angeles where you can truly disconnect from your devices, and reconnect with yourself, family and friends.

4. Solvang

If you want to feel like you’re in Europe for the weekend, then Solvang is the place for you! It’s a cute little Danish town, with Dutch influence as well!

It’s just under an hour north of Santa Barbara, so about 2 – 3 hours north of Los Angeles, making it an excellent contender for best day trips from Los Angeles. There are a lot of nice wineries and museums, as well as bakeries and restaurants. We went to PANINO Solvang for lunch, and had really tasty sandwiches.

Things to do in Solvang

Explore Danish Culture and Architecture: You could spend all day just wandering through the cute streets of Solvang and admiring the unique Danish-style architecture. Some of my favorite landmarks include the replica of Copenhagen’s Round Tower, the windmills, and the Little Mermaid statue.

I would also suggest checking out the Elverhøj Museum of History & Art, if you want to learn more about the town’s Danish heritage and showcases traditional crafts and artifacts.
Indulge in Danish Pastries and Cuisine: There are so many renowned bakeries, such as Olsen’s Danish Village Bakery or Mortensen’s Danish Bakery, which offer freshly baked pastries like aebleskivers and butter rings.

If you want to skip the tourist traps and go straight to the hidden eateries in Solvang, I suggest booking the Food & Photo Tour. You’ll also get to learn more about the Danish lifestyle and history of Solvang from your local tour guide!

There are lots of other cute little towns around Solvang like Los Olivos, Santa Ynez, and Los Alamos. Highly recommend planning multiple day trips from Los Angeles to all of these surrounding neighborhoods.

5. Laguna Beach

Just a little over an hour’s drive from Los Angeles, Laguna Beach is famous for its art galleries, tide pools, and scenic coves. It’s a perfect spot for a relaxing beach day or a coastal hike!

Fun fact: Laguna Beach was the first beach in California that I ever visited! So it really holds a special place in my heart, and deserves a spot on the list of best day trips from Los Angeles.

Things to do in Laguna Beach

Hang by the beach: This has to be an obvious choice – Laguna Beach gives me major surf vibes, like what you think of when you think of California. Main Beach is located right downtown and is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and volleyball.
For more off the beaten path spots, I would recommend checking out Thousand Steps Beach or Victoria Beach, which is known for its hidden pirate tower and tide pools.You could definitely make any of these beaches their own day trips from Los Angeles too.
Visit the Art Galleries and/or Art Festivals: Another one of my favorite things to do is to stroll down Pacific Coast Highway and pop into all of the different art galleries. You could also plan a visit during one of the famous art festivals such as the Sawdust Art Festival, Festival of Arts, or Pageant of the Masters.
Whale Watching Cruise: I highly recommend booking a Whale Watching Cruise! While technically this will depart from Newport Beach, about 15 minutes north of Laguna Beach, you’ll get to see the Laguna coastline. I’ve done this tour and it’s incredible!
Hiking: There are so many beautiful spots to hike in Laguna Beach. Two of my favorites are the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park and Crystal Cove State Park, which offer miles of trails with ocean views, wildlife, and lots of photo opportunities.

6. La Jolla

La Jolla is an incredible little beach town right above San Diego, and about 2 hours south of Los Angeles. If I could move here tomorrow, I would. Instead, I just plan lots of day trips from Los Angeles so I can spend as much time here as possible!

Highlights include the unreal views of the ocean and coastline, Torrey Pines Reserve, and the downtown La Jolla area with lots of boutique shops, restaurants, and hotels.

Things to do in La Jolla

Sea Cave Kayaking Tour: Going on a sea cave kayaking tour is an awesome way to check out La Jolla’s Ecological Reserve and get up close and personal with the sea lions. This is a must, especially if it’s your first time venturing down to La Jolla.
Museum of Contemporary Art: The museum itself is a work of art, designed by architect Irving Gill. The building’s minimalist aesthetic with natural materials complement the surrounding landscape, creating a peaceful environment for experiencing all of the art.

Make sure to check out the large corner window that gives you full, stunning view of La Jolla on one of your day trips from Los Angeles!
Explore the La Jolla Village: There are a variety of upscale shops, art galleries, and gourmet restaurants all throughout La Jolla. You can walk through the village to explore the boutiques and enjoy dining options that range from casual beachside cafes to fine dining establishments with ocean views.

7. Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Lake is a picturesque little mountain town located about two hours east of Los Angeles, making it a perfect destination for day trips from Los Angeles. I think it’s pretty comparable to Mammoth Lakes, but is much closer and accessible from Los Angeles.

Regardless of the season, Big Bear Lake offers a variety of outdoor activities and scenic beauty. You can go skiing and snowboarding in the winter, or boating, fishing, and hiking in the summer!

Things to do at Big Bear Lake

Scenic Sky Chair: During the summer, you’re able to take a ride on the Scenic Sky Chair (ski lift) to get to see the panoramic views of the San Bernardino National Forest and go up to the top of Snow Valley or Snow Summit. Pro-tip: you can get a free lift ticket on your birthday!
Zipline Tour: Another summer adventure, the Zipline Tour will have you gliding among the treetops and getting a birds-eye view of Johnson Valley! There are nine different ziplines, so there will be no shortage of thrills!
The Village at Big Bear Lake: This is a great place to visit in every season; there’s a variety of shops, restaurants, and entertainment options. You can stroll through the village to browse boutique shops, enjoy a meal at one of the local eateries, or relax with a coffee at a cozy café. The village also hosts lots of events and festivals throughout the year, so you can plan multiple day trips from Los Angeles!
Big Bear Mountain Resort: And of course, I have to mention what Big Bear is most known for; it’s skiing and snowboarding! During the winter, Big Bear Lake transforms into a popular winter sports destination, also including snow tubing, snowshoeing, and other fun winter activities.

This is harder to fit into day trips from Los Angeles, so would recommend extending your stay to a full weekend if possible.

8. Sequoia National Park

Finally, Sequoia National Park is a bit further but SO WORTH IT!! It’s about a 4 – 5 hour drive from Los Angeles. It is possible to do it in a day, which is why I included it in the best day trips from Los Angeles, but I would definitely suggest making this a full or long weekend trip if possible.

It’s the perfect nature escape, and the sequoia trees are absolutely breathtaking. Did you know that sequoias are the largest living trees in the world?! Some of which can grow up to 275 feet (aka 83 meters)!

I highly recommend staying in one of the official lodges for the full experience. When we went, we stayed in an Airbnb, but I would love to go back and truly disconnect and soak in the national park!

Things to do at Sequoia National Park

Visit the Giant Forest: Take Congress Trail, an easy, accessible 2-mile loop, to walk through the Giant Forest. The Giant Forest allows you to get up close and personal with the sequoia trees, including the General Sherman Tree, which the largest living tree by volume. If you’re planning just a days trip from Los Angeles, this is the top attraction I’d go to.
Explore the Crystal Cave: Alternatively, you can explore the underground of Sequoia National Park by touring the Crystal Cave. This marble cavern features incredible formations like stalactites, stalagmites, and mineral deposits. Guided tours are available from spring to fall, giving you more knowledge about the cave’s geology and history.
Hiking: Sequoia National Park offers a ton of different hiking trails for all levels of experience. Popular trails include the Moro Rock Trail, which leads to a granite dome offering panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada, and the Tokopah Falls Trail, a moderate hike that ends with a spectacular waterfall.

7 Things To Check Out In Downtown Los Angeles

Looking for the coolest things to check out in downtown Los Angeles (DTLA)? Having worked in DTLA for over 7 years (minus the pandemic of course), I have gotten to explore a lot of what downtown has to offer!

I will be honest; it is not my favorite place to be in Los Angeles. There are a lot of office buildings, so depending where you go after work hours, it can feel a little deserted. HOWEVER there are a lot of unique gems that can’t be found anywhere else. And for that reason, I keep coming back and highly recommend these spots to visitors!

1. Grand Central Market

Grand Central Market is one of my faaavorite all time spots to eat lunch. They have literally EVERYTHING you could ever possibly want to eat here. It’s a big market with 30+ different vendors; they even have a bar! There’s a lot of open seating, though it can get pretty busy around lunchtime.

You really can’t go wrong here. My classic go-to’s are Broad Street Oyster (lobster roll), Eggslut, Lucky Bird (fried chicken), McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams, Sticky Rice and Wexler’s Deli. But let me be clear: these are also the only places I have tried…I have no doubt that all the options are amazing.

Additionally, there is a Bazaar downstairs every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There are new local merchants each week, so this is definitely worth checking out if it’s open. For more information, check out GCM’s website here.

2. Bradbury Building

This iconic building is actually still used as an office building, and has doubled as a site for many movies, tv shows and books. Have you ever seen Blade Runner? If so, it might look familiar.

This spot is definitely worth checking out; it’s open from 10 AM – 2 PM on weekends, and from 9 AM – 5 PM on weekdays. And it is free to go in! You just will not be allowed to go up any stairs as a visitor.

3. Walt Disney Concert Hall

I mean, WOW this architecture is absolutely stunning. The Walt Disney Concert Hall is home to the LA Philharmonic Orchestra, along with many other performances. You can check out all their events here.

Fun fact: there is a little hidden park in back of the concert hall. There are a couple different ways to get to the park itself, all of which involve going up many stairs. The shortest route is to go straight up from the entrance closest to 2nd St. Here’s a sneak peek of what it looks like:

4. Central Library

The LA Central Library is so stunning. It’s the largest library in Los Angeles with eight levels! This is the perfect spot to come relax, read a book, get some work done, or just walk around.

They also opened a Maker Space/Studio where you can use fancy sewing machines, film on a green screen, print with a 3D printer and more. This is more for LA residents, as all you need is a library card to use the space.

5. The Broad Museum

The Broad is a unique, contemporary art museum with free general admission always. You will just need to reserve your tickets online, usually 3-4 weeks in advance. They do not have tickets on-site.

I highly recommend booking the “Infinity Mirrored Room + General Admission” tickets. In addition to the museum, you will get 1 minute inside Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrored Room—The Souls of Millions of Light Years Away  (2013). It’s absolutely stunning; I’ve now visited the room twice!

6. Angels Flight Railway

This little railway will take you up and down the hill from Grand Avenue to Hill Street. Fun fact: it’s the world’s shortest railway, with the rides running for under a minute! It’s only $1 to ride up or down, or $2 roundtrip. Pro-tip: if you buy the roundtrip ticket you will get a little souvenir ticket to take home with you!

This is right outside of Grand Central Market, so highly recommend tacking this onto your visit before or after lunch. For more information, including their operating hours, check out their website here.

7. The Last Bookstore

Last but certainly not least, the Last Bookstore! This is a unique bookstore that has these cute instagram-worthy installations located on the upstairs floor. There is also an art gallery on the second level, which is fun to check out. If you’re a book lover, I highly recommend coming here; there’s a ton of seating around the store as well to sit and enjoy the books!

Rose Bowl Flea Market: Everything You Need To Know

If you’ve never heard of the Rose Bowl Flea Market, you’ve got to add it to your list! I’ve got all the details for you from how to purchase tickets to the food situation, plus other fun things to do in the area. I really love coming here, it’s so fun to explore all the vendors and find unique clothes or pieces for my apartment!

The Rose Bowl itself is a college football stadium that hosts a variety of other events throughout the year. I’ve even been to a country concert here!

The Flea Market takes place the second Sunday of every month, from 9AM to 4PM, rain or shine.

Tickets

They’ve switched to an entirely online ticket process, so you will need to purchase a ticket beforehand here. If you forget to do this before you drive there, don’t worry. They have QR codes all over with the link to the website to purchase there.

Normal admission opens at 9 AM and a ticket costs $12 per person. However, if you want VIP (early) access, you can enter starting at 5 AM with a VIP ticket, which costs $20 per person! All the details are on the website. If you’re trying to beat the crowds and want first dibs on all the unique vintage items, I highly recommend the VIP ticket.

Make sure you grab your souvenir ticket (featured below) when you first walk in! When I went, they were located at a folding table off to the left. If you’re there early, they sometimes have other free merch you can snag too!

Getting There & Parking

One of my favorite parts about the Rose Bowl Flea Market is that there is a TON of parking. And it is all FREE! I’ve never had an issue finding a spot to park. Regardless of where you park though, you will likely have to walk 5-10 minutes to the entrance.

Important Things To Note

There are 100+ vendors around the entire Rose Bowl selling clothes, crafts, plants, self care products, art, you name it! PLUS there is a massive vintage section outside of the Rose Bowl. Your ticket covers all areas! It usually takes me about 2 hours to go around the Rose Bowl, and then I spend about 1 hour in the vintage section. You could easily spend the full day here though, so come prepared.

There is a Food Court with a variety of food options inside. It is sort of expensive (stadium pricing) so I highly recommend bringing in your own water bottle and snacks. You will definitely get hungry and thirsty. When I went, they were charging like $5 for a water bottle!

Since it’s a football stadium, there are a ton of restrooms all throughout the market which is so nice. If you’re anything like me, this will be a big plus, as you’ll want to be drinking a lot of water throughout the day too!

Nearby Attractions

Once you finish up at the Flea Market, you have lots of options to keep exploring around Pasadena! I’ve included a few of my favorites here:

Grab a meal in downtown Pasadena (highly recommend Nick’s Pasadena)
Check out the Burlington Arcade, a UK-inspired mini shopping mall
Explore the Huntington Library botanical gardens
Visit the Descanso Gardens; especially if you come during the holiday season, they have an Enchanted Forest light display!

How To Call An Uber From LAX

Knowing how to call an Uber from LAX is essential when you are traveling to Los Angeles! They implemented a policy a few years ago that disallows Ride App services from picking up passengers directly from baggage claim. This includes Taxis, Ubers, and Lyfts.

They do make tweaks to the policies from time to time. I’ll be sure to keep this guide updated so you can be in the know next time you fly to LA. Keep reading for the current steps to get yourself an Uber, Taxi, or Lyft!

Types of pickups that are allowed

First of all, if someone you know is coming to pick you up from LAX, they will be able to go into the regular loop and scoop you from baggage claim. Pro-tip: depending on when you land, it could be faster for you to go upstairs and have them pick you up from arrivals.

If your hotel offers an airport shuttle, these will also pick up passengers directly from the curb outside baggage claim. I have used these airport shuttles before when I’ve parked my car longterm at one of the nearby airport hotel parking lots. It is pretty simple to use, I would recommend this option if you are going away for less than a week. You can reserve these online in advance, and it’s a lot cheaper than parking at LAX or calling Ubers both ways.

LAX also modified its policy to allow UberBlack and UberBlack SUV to also pick up directly from the outer curb. So if you want to save time and the hassle, this is a good option.

Using the LAX-It Shuttle

As you’re exiting from baggage claim, follow the signs to Shuttle pickup. When you exit the airport and are outside, there will be signs for LAX-It Shuttles. You’ll want to look for these white buses with the big green LAX-It signs on them:

According to their official website, these shuttles come around every 7 minutes, so you should not be waiting long. When I just got back from Europe, I actually got really lucky and was able to walk right onto the next one. These are free of charge, and they will take you to the official pick up area for ride apps and Taxis.

The ride from the airport to the pickup zone is usually 5-10 minutes, depending on traffic. From there, you are then able to call your Uber or Lyft. The app will not allow you to call one until you are close enough in range. The taxis, Ubers and Lyfts each have their own dedicated lane(s) for pickup, so make sure you follow the signs to the correct one.

If you’re hailing a taxi, you will just get in line for the taxis and take the next available one to your destination.

If you called an Uber or Lyft, you will just wait in the zone until your ride arrives! Depending on the time of day, this can take anywhere from 1 minute to 20 minutes. If it’s a busy time, usually drivers will be waiting here already to get connected to a rider.

My sister and I had difficulty one time a couple years ago getting connected to an Uber. We ended up just hopping in a cab, which costs around the same. You can ask the cab drivers how much it will cost to get to your destination; it is typically a flat fee calculated based on your destination from the airport.

Best Restaurants for Brunch

Bardonna

Bardonna is hands down my favorite go-to restaurant in LA. I’ve categorized it under brunch, as I usually go here during brunch time or take my out-of-town visitors here for brunch. However, I usually (always) order the Chicken Bowl OMG it is so delicious. I could eat it everyday. You’ve got to check out Bardonna if you haven’t been yet! Republique

République is an iconic restaurant in Miracle Mile, serving brunch on weekends. They also have a bakery there, making fresh bread daily. You can get some to take home after your meal. Unfortunately, they do not take reservations so you may find yourself waiting in a bit of a line for brunch, but it is worth it. Their dinner is also delicious, makes for a good date night pick, and you can make dinner reservations.

Snug Harbor

For my friends out there who love diners as much as I do, Snug Harbor has got to be next on your list. It’s a small little neighborhood diner that’s been operating since the 1940’s. I mean, just look at these pancakes!!

Toast Bakery Cafe

I used to live over in Mid-City, by the Grove, and would go to Toast Bakery Cafe probably every other weekend. The food is phenomenal, and it’s right on 3rd Street, which has a lot of other cute shops and restaurants you can explore.

Best Restaurants for Overall Vibe

Belle's Beach House

Fun fact: Belle’s Beach House is where my boyfriend and I went on our first date! It’s a tropical, Hawaii-themed restaurant right next to Venice Beach. The aesthetic is immaculate, and the food is delicious! This would be a great spot for a big group, especially if you’re celebrating a friends birthday or promotion. We ordered like half of the appetizers haha you really can’t go wrong with the food, and the drinks are really fun and delicious.

Openaire

Openaire is a stunning greenhouse-turned-restaurant-combo attached to the A-Line Hotel in Koreatown. My goodness, just look at the greenery here. You can get breakfast, lunch, dinner or even weekend brunch here; just be sure to make a reservation in advance. And also specify that you want to be seated in the greenhouse! It’s definitely a bit pricier and although the food is good, it’s definitely the vibes you’re going for here.

Élephante

For the CLASSIC dinner spot in Santa Monica, you’ve got to make sure Élephante is on your list. Reservations open 30 days in advance and fill up quickly, so make sure to book yours online and select the Sunset Room. If you go here before sunset, you’ll get an incredible front row view of the sun setting over the Santa Monica Beach. They serve delicious Italian food; make sure to get the whipped eggplant appetizer, you’ll thank me later!

Best Restaurants for a Unique Experience

Meteora

I actually have no words to describe how cool my dining experience at Meteora was. It was created by Michelin star chef, Jordan Kahn, and the food was so delicious and presented beautifully. I felt like I was transported to another world. I’ll leave you with this video overview from when I visited for brunch and just say that you need to go here ASAP. They also serve dinner, and you can make your reservation in advance online.

Catch LA

There are a couple Catch restaurants in the US you may be familiar with; Catch LA is a very popular, upscale option located in West Hollywood. Careful you don’t confuse it with Catch Steak LA – Catch LA serves amazing seafood. You can often spot a celebrity here, especially if you go in the middle of the week, although I can’t make any promises. And make sure to get your pic of the iconic entryway😉

Barton G. The Restaurant

Barton G. is one of the most fun restaurants I have ever been to. Everything you order comes out with an extravagant presentation, and usually is a clever play on the dish name. If you want to see some of their fancy menu items, you can take a look at their Instagram. Or, you can make your reservation now and choose to be surprised in the best way!

Best Restaurants for Date Night

Telèferic Barcelona

I actually stumbled across Telèferic Barcelona a couple weeks ago randomly while I was out for a hot girl walk. It is a newly opened restaurant located in Brentwood with authentic Spanish cuisine (they have one location in Barcelona). This is such a fun date spot, and is really lively at night. You can start off with a drink at the bar, then share all of their yummy tapas plus paella for dinner!

The Upper West

The Upper West serves happy hour from 4:30 pm – 7:00 pm Wednesday through Sunday, making it an ideal candidate for date night. The food is delicious; I highly recommend sharing the Steak Tacos for two. It’s the perfect amount of food for dinner, especially if you get a couple drinks and appetizers.

The Misfit

Another go-to for happy hour is The Misfit, located right in the heart of Santa Monica. The restaurant is more dimly lit, giving it the perfect date night atmosphere. You can opt to grab drinks at the bar, or sit down for dinner – the food is delicious!

8 Best Places To Visit In Los Angeles This Year

Ah Los Angeles, the place I am so blessed to be able to call home! I grew up in Upstate New York, then came out to LA for college, where I have stayed ever since.

My parents even followed me out here and moved out to Southern California in the summer of 2019. I like to joke that is how I know I am their favorite child 😉

So definitely have a lot of SoCal content coming your way!

As for all spots on my list, I still visit these places, regardless of how many times I have been. I can’t lie, LA is a pretty great place to live.

I sometimes have to pinch myself when I think about how my younger self always dreamed of this. There’s a mix of museums, restaurants, outdoor parks, and more – there is truly so much to do in Los Angeles!

1. Santa Monica Beach Walk

This is an official part of my workout routine! My gym is right across from Santa Monica beach, and the sunrise and sunset views cannot be beat. I truly feel so lucky every single time I go for a walk before work along the path. You can also rent bikes, scooters, or rollerblades and enjoy the beach path that way! I recently bought a pair of rollerblades to teach myself something new and blade off into the sunset.

2. Hollywood Sign

You know this had to be on the list…this is a very popular hike that will be full of tourists. However, I think everyone should do it at least once. It is pretty easy, and you can get great views of the city. Not to mention, views of the sign itself!

3.Griffith Observatory

The Observatory is fun because 1) it has an unreal view of downtown Los Angeles, and 2) inside there is a Planetarium! You can also hike to the Hollywood Sign from here. Although it is a much longer hike than if you park directly at the base of the sign. I would definitely try to go here on a sunny day, when there are no clouds in the sky – you should be able to see all of Los Angeles. Pretty sweet!

4. Shangri-La

The Shangri-La is a hotel with the ONYX Rooftop Bar with an incredible view of Santa Monica! Another great place to watch the sunset and enjoy a drink. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to go up in the vintage elevator. You don’t need a reservation to come here, in fact they don’t even take them. Therefore, I recommend coming here about an hour before the sunset, or even a bit earlier if you are coming in the summer. It can get pretty busy and is a popular spot for locals and tourists!

5. Venice Canals

An iconic classic. Somewhat similar to the canals in Venice, Italy, you can walk along the paths and little bridges, and also enjoy a great view of the sunset here. This is the perfect spot for a little date night, or pre dinner walk.

6. Dodger Stadium

If you are here during baseball season (April – October), I highly recommend going to a Dodgers game! The tickets are pretty cheap, especially during the week. The food is actually very good as well – not just your typical hot dogs & fries (though they have that too)!

7. Catch LA

As the only restaurant on this list, this spot is definitely the priciest. It is a well-known, delicious seafood restaurant where you can often spot a celebrity out to dinner! I would highly recommend the Crunchy Rice Cakes, Wagyu Gyoza, and MRC Roll. You can also go here for just a drink. Definitely make a reservation in advance – this place is super popular!

8. Elysian Park

Hidden away above Downtown Los Angeles, Elysian Park rounds out my list as another great sunset spot. This hidden gem has so many palm trees lining the streets, it makes for the perfect photo opportunity. It is also just such a peaceful place to come visit, and you get a great view of Downtown Los Angeles and Dodger Stadium.

Regardless of where you go, Los Angeles has so much to do and see. It is impossible to fit into just one trip. There are so many different neighborhoods that have a wide variety of things to offer, you really can’t go wrong!
