The country is home to 28 states, each having its own language and different dialects. Moreover, while the nation is modern and technologically advanced, it is still rooted in its beliefs, traditions, heritage, and spirituality.

To someone who is visiting India for the first time, the country can be chaotic and overwhelming. When planning your trip, preparing a proper structure is important before you start your journey to India. This comprehensive India travel guide will tell you everything you need to know about traveling to India.

If this is your first time in India, make sure you’re aware of what to expect. These tips will help you appear less like a tourist, and more like a seasoned visitor, or even a local!

Do I need a visa to visit India?

Yes, it is crucial to get your India visa before making your plans to visit. Your Indian visa requirement would depend on your nationality. Citizens of several countries are eligible for visa on arrival and visa-free entry in India. However, most countries need to get a visa to visit India.

The country offers e-visa or electronic visa to people who are visiting Indian for tourism, business, or medical purposes. With an e-visa, foreign nationals can stay in the country for 30 days.

For a longer stay, you will have to apply for a regular or paper visa through the Indian embassy or visa application center in your country.

The visa guide for India states that to get an India visa, you need to submit the scanned copies of your passport (minimum 6 months validity and two blank pages), colored photographs, bank statements, confirmed return ticket, and hotel booking.

When is the best time to visit India?

Once you know how to get a visa to India, the next step is to choose the right time to visit the country. Ideally, the winter season is the best time to visit India.

Winter in India (October – March)

Winter in India happens between October and March, when the average temperature is between 50°F – 77°F (10°C – 25°C). The weather is pleasant, making sightseeing quite comfortable across the country.

This is also the time when major festivals like Diwali, Navratri, and Christmas happen in India, giving you the chance to enjoy the lights, colors, and festivities.

Summer in India (April – June)

Summer season in India is between April and June. While winter months are ideal, it does not mean that one must not visit India during the rest of the year. India sees quite a harsh summer, with temperatures going above 104°F (40°C) in several areas.

Still, it is a great time to visit the hill stations and places in higher altitudes like Manali, Ooty, Shimla, Mussoorie, Munnar, Ladakh, or Spiti Valley. Many places in the North open up during the summer season, after heavy snowfall of the winters.

Monsoon Season (July – September)

The third season in India is the monsoon season, which is between July and September. Heavy rains usually happen in different parts of the country, making traveling in India a bit of hassle.

But it is the apt time to visit the countryside that transforms into verdant landscapes during this time of the year. If you are looking forward to a slow and serene holiday, it would be a great time to visit the southern part of India like Kerala, North-East, and the Western Ghats.

As it is not tourist season, the monsoon is when you can enjoy a budget holiday in India.

What are the different regions of India?

India is a large country with an area of 3.28 million square kilometers. In fact, it is the seventh largest country in the world.

So, it is impossible to see the entire country on just one visit. An easier way would be to focus on the different regions of the country, choosing the ones that you find most intriguing.

North India

The Northernmost part of India is rich in history and has some of the most iconic historical landmarks to boot. It is home of the mighty Himalayas and is also considered the center of spirituality.

Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan are the places to visit here.

West India

The western part of India constitutes states like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, and even parts of Rajasthan. Cultural heritage, beautiful coastal areas, and glamorous cities are a few other things awaiting you here.

East India

Fascinating history, deep-rooted cultures, and unique traditions are what you can see here. The Eastern states are known for their art and literature as well. Orissa, West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand are the states you can visit here.

Central India

Natural wonders, wildlife, tribal culture, ancient civilizations, and historical and cultural sites are what you get to see and enjoy in central India. Madhya Pradesh (the largest state of the country) and Chhattisgarh are the two major states here.

Northeast India

Known as the hidden gems of India, the Northeast consists of seven states. Breathtaking landscapes, unique cultures, lush green forests, and adventurous activities await you here. Assam, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Sikkim are some of the must-visit places.

South India

Five states constitute the south of India: Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala. Historic temples, ancient and modern cities, pristine beaches, glistening backwaters, and surreal hill stations are what you can expect in the southern part of India. There is a separate fan base for the food here.

Islands of India

India is also home to some gorgeous islands, the two main ones being Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep Island. These are perfect for a relaxing holiday while enjoying the rich biodiversity of Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea.

Where are the best places to go in India?

When you are planning your itinerary, you must consider adding these must-see places in India into your list.

1. Delhi

The Delhi city is most popular for its historical landmarks, many of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Red Fort, Qutub Minar, Humayun’s Tomb, and the India Gate are the sites you must see here.

Delhi is renowned for its colorful markets and especially its street food.

2. Jaipur, Rajasthan

Jaipur is a city that encompasses the opulence and grandeur of ancient Indian royalty like no other. Sturdy forts, lavish palaces, amazing architecture, and a fascinating history are what you will find here.

Do not forget to check out the bustling markets of this city!

3. Shillong, Meghalaya

Shillong is one of the picturesque cities that are spread across Northeast India. The breathtaking landscapes of the city are what attract people to this place. The lush valleys, glistening waterfalls, the rolling hills, the beautiful lakes, and the dramatic canyons are a few of the reasons to visit this place.

4. Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu

Tucked in the eastern corner of Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry is a quaint town that reflects the French heritage of the place. Apart from checking out the unique architecture of the place, Pondicherry is known for its beautiful beaches, peaceful vibe, and delicious food.

5. Hampi, Karnataka

An open-air museum, Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that preserves the ancient temple ruins belonging to the Vijayanagara Empire. The place is home to more than 1600 ancient ruins comprising temple complexes, palaces, ancient markets, and so many more interesting structures, creating a one-of-a-kind landscape.

6. Mumbai, Maharashtra

The financial capital of India, Mumbai has an unmatched vibe, a pulse that draws everyone in. This is a city where colonial architecture and history, cultural diversity, Bollywood glamor, modern skyline, vibrant markets, and stunning coastlines co-exist into a chaotic, yet beautiful symphony.

7. Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh

Varanasi is the spiritual center of the country. Considered to be the holiest cities of the country, Varanasi is home to the Ganges, which is believed to purify all our sins.

Visiting the ancient temples, witnessing the mesmerizing Ganga Aarti, taking part in the various festivals, and exploring the numerous Ghats are some of the things to do here.

8. Goa

The smallest state in India, Goa is one of the most popular tourist spots, thanks to its fantastic beaches. People visit Goa for its thrilling water sports, Portuguese heritage, historical sites, and natural beauty. The party and food scene of Goa also make it worth visiting.

9. Kerala

Known as God’s Own Country, Kerala is renowned for its magical scenic beauty, endowed with beautiful backwaters, lush tea gardens, dramatic beaches, charming cities and towns, and a unique culture.

Many people visit Kerala to enjoy its therapeutic and rejuvenating Ayurvedic treatments as well.

10. Rann of Kutch, Gujarat

The white desert of India is worth visiting at least once in your lifetime. It is truly fascinating to witness the Rann of Kutch during the different times of the day, especially during sunrise, sunset, and on a full moon night.

The best time to visit this place is during the Rann Utsav Festival.

11. Andaman & Nicobar Islands

If you are craving for an island break, there is no better place than Andaman & Nicobar Islands. An archipelago on the Bay of Bengal, Andaman & Nicobar Islands are bestowed with some of the most pristine beaches in the country.

It is also known for its intriguing history, rich marine life, peaceful ambience, and delicious food.

How to get around India

There are multiple ways of transportation in India, mainly airways, railways, and roadways.

By Plane

The easiest and most convenient way of traveling in India is by airways. Almost all the major cities have multiple flights connecting to each other. Moreover, the country has several budget-friendly airlines as well.

By Train

The second-most convenient way of traveling in India is by train. The Indian railway network is huge and connects almost all the states to each other. Passenger trains have basic sleeper compartments to more luxury two-tier and first class air-conditioned compartments as well.

By Bus

The road network of the country is also one of the ways to travel across the country. You will find sleeper and semi-sleeper buses traveling from one city to the other.

Local Transportation

When it comes to local transportation, you have multiple options. You can rent a private car or hail a taxi for exploring the cities. Auto rickshaws, the three-tiered vehicles, are popular in most Indian cities and towns. Buses are also common way of transportation in most places in the country. Several cities also offer metro services.

Exploring India is exciting, as the country has numerous layers and facets, each one more interesting and fascinating than the other. While you may not get to see everything with one visit, a single visit is enough to ensure that you will want to visit the country again and again.

9 Things You Need To Know Before Visiting India

1. Safety in India

Firstly, before you go anywhere, I always recommend reading the US Travel Advisory for that country so you are aware of anything going on.

India is the most populated country in the world, so most places you go (especially as a tourist) will be crowded and full of other people. It is important to be extra aware of your surroundings in crowded places. Make sure to keep your belongings close to you.

2. Do not drink the tap water

You can either buy bottled water or refill your bottles at filtered water stations available in most public places like airports and malls.

I would also be wary of consuming raw / sliced fruits and vegetables that have been rinsed off with tap water.

3. Pack your medications

You must carry basic medications for allergies, stomach upsets, fever, etc. As always, I would recommend packing your favorite medicines from home, so that you have them with you when you’re abroad.

4. Pack (and wear) a ton of sunscreen

India experiences some of the world’s highest UV levels due to its tropical location near the equator, with the UV Index frequently reaching “extreme” levels of 11+ during peak hours, especially in the summer. It is important to pack sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, and insect repellent when traveling in India.

My go-to recommendation is Blue Lizard sunscreen. I make sure to always bring that along and reapply throughout the day, and have not gotten burnt when doing so!

5. Make sure you have the proper vaccinations

Make sure that you have taken vaccinations for malaria, typhoid, and more before visiting the country.

I recommend checking the CDC website before your trip to make sure you are up to date and have all the proper vaccinations.

6. Dress modestly

While it is ok to wear any kind of clothes in cities, it would be best to pick modest clothing while traveling in smaller cities and towns, especially at night.

7. Be cautious when trying street food

When it comes to food, there is rarely a country that can compete with India. The diversity in the region, languages, and culture can also be seen in the food of the nation. The Indian cuisine is vast and packed with flavors, colors, and textures that come together to give you varied experiences.

Each region and state has its specialties. While the ingredients may be the same or similar, the use of spices and the cooking methods give rise to myriads of dishes. The best part is that India has a wide range of vegetarian dishes, although Indian non- vegetarian dishes are also quite popular across the world.

However, while street food is something you must try in India, it is important to be cautious. Especially if you are not used to eating street food, it may take your stomach a few days (or longer) to acclimate.

8. Bring hand sanitizer

Do carry wet wipes and sanitizers with you and use them whenever necessary. Because of how crowded touristy spots can get, plus the hot, humid climate, you will want to be able to wash your hands and face throughout the day.

9. Bring cash

You can use cards for payment at most stores and restaurants. However, you will need to carry cash while shopping in small stores and street markets.

Channel Islands National Park: 11 Things You Need To Know Before You Go

If you’re not convinced that California is the best state, then visiting Channel Islands National Park will definitely seal the deal for you. This national park is so stunning with its limestone cliffs, turquoise blue waters, and scenic hiking trails.

It’s located in between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, and can easily be done as a day trip from either place.

I lived in Los Angeles for over 10 years, not ever knowing that Channel Islands National Park was so close! So I wanted to share everything you need to know about Channel Islands National Park before you go.

1. How to get to Channel Islands National Park

Firstly, Channel Islands National Park is comprised of 5 different islands: Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara Islands.

Anacapa and Santa Cruz islands are the most accessible, with year-round ferry service, and have the most to do for a day trip. I went to Scorpion Cove on Santa Cruz island for a day trip and had the best time.

To get to Channel Islands National Park, you’ll need to book your roundtrip boat tickets with Island Packers Cruises. Boats depart from two different harbors: Ventura Harbor and the Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard.

2. Reservations are required to visit

Because of the limited number of ferry spots, reservations are required to visit Channel Islands National Park. However, you don’t need to make a separate reservation with the park – just the boat tickets.

Make sure to make your reservations in advance! Since you have to book both your departure and return trip, spots can fill up quickly if you’re just looking to day trip.

3. You can take just a day trip or camp overnight

Day trips are the more popular option to visit the islands, but you can also choose to camp overnight to really maximize your time in Channel Islands National Park.

Make sure to read through all of the guidelines so you know what to pack and bring with you, and what’s not allowed.

4. Ferries can be canceled due to weather or rough seas

Definitely be aware that in the winter/spring (December – May) you could end up having to spend an extra night or two on the islands due to changing weather conditions.

There are bulletin boards on the islands that will be updated with the most up-to-date information regarding island pick-up times.

If you’re camping overnight, make sure you pack extra food and water, as there will not be places on the islands to purchase any.

5. There are no shops or restaurants on the islands

While there are visitor centers that may or may not be staffed, there are no shops, businesses, restaurants, etc on the islands. Whether you’re day tripping or camping overnight, make sure you pack the essentials and bring lots of food and water.

There are local restaurants by the harbors on the mainland that allow you to pre-order a bagged lunch. This is a great option if you don’t want to pack your own picnic lunch. I ordered lunch from Harbor Cove Cafe.

Additionally, there are no trash cans so everything you bring with you to the islands, you must carry back out with you.

6. There are pit toilets on the islands

Santa Rosa Island has flushing toilets and running water, but all the other islands have pit toilets. The good news is, you will be able to the bathroom on whichever island you choose.

7. There is minimal cell coverage

I’ve found this to be common in most US National Parks, but there is not much cell coverage throughout Channel Islands National Park. I did randomly find pockets of cell reception while on the Potato Harbor Trail, but it was slow and unreliable.

I recommend downloading Offline Google Maps or AllTrails before you go so that you’ll be able to access the hiking trails and maps even when you lose cell coverage.

8. There are 30 hiking trails throughout Channel Islands National Park

Although it may seem like the islands are small, there are so many incredible hikes you can go on to explore Channel Islands National Park! The most popular one is Potato Harbor, which you can easily hike on a day trip to Scorpion Cove (Santa Cruz Island).

9. There are barely any shaded or covered areas

This is something to keep in mind when planning your outfit and what to pack for Channel Islands National Park. I found that there were very few shaded areas throughout the island and I had to reapply my sunscreen often.

Definitely make sure you bring a hat, and lots of water to stay hydrated.

10. You can spot lots of native wildlife

Being able to see all of the wildlife is a major reason why you should visit Channel Islands National Park! On our ferry ride over to Scorpion Cove, we saw tons of dolphins swimming around and even a humpback whale.🤯

On the islands themselves, you can spot native wildlife like the island fox, island deer mouse, harvest mouse and spotted skunk. You can also see bald eagles flying around in the sky; although I unfortunately did not see one of these, how cool is that!

Make sure you have your camera ready to snap a pic of the wildlife!

11. Kayaks and snorkel gear are available to rent

On Santa Cruz Island, you can rent a kayak to paddle in the ocean waters at either Scorpion Anchorage or Prisoners Harbor. You may also bring your own kayak out to the islands.

Make sure to reserve a kayak in advance – there’s a limited number each day and the team needs to know how many kayaks to bring out to the island.

Unique Things to Do in Paris: 10 Fun + Unexpected Experiences

Having been to Paris 3 times now, I still wouldn’t call myself a “local” or anything of that sort. However, I definitely feel like more of a seasoned visitor who actually has some hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path suggestions to share.

And I’ll let you in on a little secret: I actually hated Paris the first time I visited.🙊 Ah! I know! The horror!

Soo I wanted to share 10 unique things to do in Paris that you may not have heard of, or may have missed on your first trip to Paris! These are all things I wish I did the first time I visited that definitely would have made my experience better.

1. Learn how to make a classic French pastry

What better way to immerse yourself in French culture than to bake a scrumptious French croissant or macaron? I took a macaron-making class with mom on my most recent trip to Paris, and it was so fun.

We learned the proper technique, got to taste test as we went, and got to take the recipe home with us!

This is a great activity to do with others, or go solo and make new friends with the other people in your class! The classes at Maison Fleuret are small, so you will get that quality interaction with the chef.

2. Take a photo at the secret photobooth in Montmartre

One of my favorite things to do, in general but especially when I travel, is get photobooth pictures! So you can imagine how stoked I was when I found one tucked away on a little street in Montmartre called Fotoautomat.

Look how cute and old-fashioned this photo strip is:

It’s definitely a unique thing to do in Paris and will give you a one-of-a-kind souvenir to take back home with you. The exact location is saved in my Google Maps list, so make sure you download that before you go!

3. Take a Seine river cruise

Taking a river cruise along the Seine is a great way to see all of the sights in Paris and learn more about the city! You’ll be able to get up close to the Eiffel Tower and find new spots of the city to explore.

You could also do a more romantic evening cruise with music and a glass of champagne. Depending on what time your boat is at, you may even get to see the Eiffel Tower sparkle…keep reading to #10 for more information on this!

Make sure you book your tickets in advance and arrive early so you can snag a seat on the top deck!

4. Explore La Galerie Dior

This one is for all of my fashion girlies or someone looking to explore Paris’ underrated museums. La Galerie Dior walks you through the history of Christian Dior, the masterpieces he created and has this insanely cool display wall organized by color when you first walk in.

I definitely recommend getting your tickets in advance; this can sell out quickly and the line to wait in person gets quite long. With tickets, you will have an assigned time slot and can walk right in when it’s your reservation time.

5. Snack on a GIANT croissant

Stop by one of Philippe Conticini’s bakeries in Paris to get your hands on the largest croissant you will ever see. They have an XL butter croissant, as well as an XL pain au chocolat (my personal favorite), and of course “regular” pastries too.

If you are really wanting to try one of the XL croissants, I would recommend placing your order online at least 2 days in advance. They do usually have one or two in stores, but it’s not always guaranteed.

6. Get dressed up and have tea at the Ritz

Instead of walking around and tiring out your feet, why don’t you enjoy tea at the Ritz Paris and feel like royalty for an afternoon?

We chose L’Impérial experience at Salon Proust and enjoyed a glass of champagne, selected a tea, and got a platter of all their pastries to try. This was such a fun, unique experience and I wish I had done it sooner!

7. Ditch the crowds and find the Louvre's secret entrance

Did you know that there are multiple entrances to the Louvre Museum? Almost everyone waits outside in this massive line to enter through the Pyramid – this is a BIG mistake!

First, make sure that you reserve your timed entry tickets online in advance, as you cannot purchase tickets at the ~secret~ entrance.

Then, you’ll want to head into the Carrousel du Louvre, a shopping mall right outside and down a level from the street. Here is a map so you can visualize how to access the entrance to save time by not waiting in line!

8. Dine at Pink Mamma

If you have not seen Pink Mamma yet all over your social media, then you are in for a treat! This is an Italian restaurant with an amazing glass rooftop that reminded me a bit of dining in a greenhouse.

Make sure to book your reservation ASAP when they open up 2 weeks in advance. I would also recommend booking for the first time slot, and showing up 15-20 minutes before they open so you can snag a table on this rooftop.

The seating is first-come, first-serve. Regardless of where you’re sat though, the food is all so delicious and vibes are immaculate.

9. Day trip to Palace of Versailles

While this might not be one of the most unique things to do in Paris, taking a day trip out to the Palace of Versailles should absolutely be on your list.

It’s located about an hour from Paris, so plan to spend at least a half day on this excursion.

Make sure you book your ticket in advance. Tickets for the earliest time slots tend to sell out quickly, but if you prefer to keep your plans more flexible you should be able to snag a later entry time closer to the date you want to go.

I recommend getting a Versailles Palace and Gardens Full Access Ticket so that you can really explore everything the palace has to offer. The Gardens alone could take you 3-4 hours just to really walk all the way through!

To visit Versailles when it’s the least busy (AKA to get the most epic pics of the Hall of Mirrors), try to go at either the earliest time slot or the latest time slot.

10. Watch the Eiffel Tower sparkle at night

Okay, okay, okay I know this one is a little more “basic” and maybe doesn’t fit in with the other unique things to do in Paris. However, the first time I visited, I had NO idea that the Eiffel Tower sparkled at night!

So, in case you’re like me, let me be the first to tell you the exciting news. After the sun sets, the Eiffel Tower will sparkle for 5 minutes every hour at the top of the hour!

Also, in case you didn’t realize this either – you can take an elevator up to the top of the Eiffel Tower for some amazinggg views.

Olympic National Park: The Best 3 Day Itinerary

Thinking of visiting Olympic National Park? This park is on the Western coast of Washington, and has one of the only rainforests in the United States!

Because of this, the park is so lush and pretty well shaded, so we never got too hot or sunburnt. However, we totally didn’t realize how much driving was involved in visiting this park…

All of the major hikes and sights look close to each other on a map, but require driving through separate entrances to access, so we spent a lot of time in the car.

Because of this, I would recommend going for at least 3 days if you are able to so you can spend a day in the rainforest, a day at the beach, and a day in the mountains. This ultimate 3-day weekend itinerary will help you plan out your trip to maximize all of your time there.

What You Should Know Before Visiting Olympic National Park

1. Weather is unpredictable and often gloomy and overcast

Because you’re right by the water and in the Pacific Northwest, you’ll find that it is often gloomy in Olympic National Park. Now, this is great for visiting the Hoh Rainforest and really adding to that ~spooky vibe~ but it’s not so great for hiking or visiting the beach.

If you’re looking for maximum sun, I would recommend booking your trip mid-July through mid-September. I visited in early July and it was overcast about half the time we were there, and the beaches were cloudy the entire time.

2. Check the Webcams before venturing out

The National Park website has webcams specifically for popular places in Olympic National Park including Hurricane Ridge, Lake Crescent, and a few of the beaches.

Definitely check these before heading out to make sure weather is okay where you’re headed!

3. Parking is readily available, except at Hoh Rainforest

We didn’t have any issues with parking, except for at Hoh Rainforest. We visited the park mid-week and found that most parking lots always had spots available, or you would maybe have to wait 5-10 minutes for someone to leave.

However, at Hoh Rainforest, the line often gets up to a 2+ hour wait, and I can’t even imagine what it looks like on weekends. I would recommend arriving to Hoh Rainforest before 8 am to ensure a parking spot without having to wait.

4. There is decent cell reception in Olympic National Park

I actually found there to be pretty good cell coverage throughout the park – especially near visitor centers and along the hikes.

However, I’d still recommend downloading Offline Google Maps for the entire area of Olympic National Park before your trip. You can also download a self-guided audio driving tour to learn more about the park – it’s like having a super affordable personal tour guide the whole time.

Also make sure to download any road reservations, park passes, etc before you enter the park.

5. Olympic National Park is ~3-4 hours from Seattle

This is something we didn’t realize when flying into Seattle; the park is actually quite far from the city. I’d recommend planning to land early to give yourself ample time to drive to your lodging before it gets dark.

6. Stay near the park

Like I’ve said, everything is pretty spread out within the park, so I recommend trying to stay as close as you can to what you want to see the most.

We stayed in Forks, a little town that was made famous by the Twilight vampire series if you’re familiar. This was really nice, because we were pretty much in the middle of everything and close to Rialto Beach and Second Beach.

I would alternatively recommend staying in Port Angeles; this is in the Northern part and is close to Hurricane Hill, Lake Crescent and Mount Storm King.

Day 1: Hoh Rainforest & Hurricane Ridge

I’ve split up the itinerary to make sure you see the best of the 3 different parts of the park: the Hoh Rainforest, the mountains, and the beaches. You can definitely mix and match spots and hikes from each category, but this is a way to organize your itinerary most efficiently!

8:30 AM: Hall of Mosses

To maximize your day, and minimize the amount of time waiting in line to enter the Hoh Rainforest, I suggest arriving by 8 AM. This might sound insane, but we got here at 9:30 AM and still had to wait 45 minutes to enter.

They say the busiest times are between 10 AM – 3 PM, so alternatively you could also come here later in the afternoon and wait only an hour or so.

Start your day with the simple Hall of Mosses trail, which is a 1.1 mile loop trail through the center of the rainforest.

You’ll get these amazing views of the mosses, ferns and these huge trees! This is a relatively flat trail that we spent about an hour walking through and really taking in the scenery.

9:30 AM: Hoh River Trail to Mineral Creek Falls

Once you finish the Hall of Mosses trail, start the hike on Hoh River Trail to Mineral Creek Falls. The trailheads are right by each other, so it’s easy to go from one to the next.

This is a 5.5 mile out-and-back trail, also with minimal elevation, that will take you to the Mineral Creek Falls.

This took us about 2.5 hours, including spending some time by the creek falls. You can also get close to the Hoh River on this trail, and take a quick dip if you’re feeling up for it!

3:00 PM: Hurricane Hill

Once you’ve wrapped up in the Hoh Rainforest, this is the perfect time to begin the drive to Hurricane Ridge. It will take you about 3 hours, and in the meantime you can eat your packed lunch, or stop in Forks to grab a quick bite.

Make sure you check the webcam before heading out; this hike starts pretty high up in the mountains so even if it’s sunny in the rainforest and towns, it can be cloudy up in the mountains. This was unfortunately the case for us, but here is what the hike should look like on a clear day:

This is a 3.4 mile out-and-back, moderately challenging hike that should take you about 2 hours. Given your body will probably want to rest after all this hiking and walking around, I suggest driving back to your lodging afterwards and stopping for dinner along the way!

Then, make sure to get a good nights rest for tomorrow’s hike, which will be the most challenging of the whole trip.

Day 2: Mt. Storm King & Devil's Punchbowl

Please make sure you have a ton of water and snacks before setting out for the day. The Mt. Storm King hike is no joke and you will need to be properly fueled for this one!

8:00 AM: Devil's Punchbowl via Spruce Railroad Trail

To kick things off for day two, I would start with this easy, 2.4 mile out-and-back trail to Devil’s Punchbowl! You’ll get to see these stunning views of Lake Crescent and get your legs warmed up for the day.

This will take you about an hour, including any extra time you spend at Devil’s Punchbowl swimming or taking photos! The water is sooo cold but we did see a lot of people going for a dip.

9:30 AM: Mount Storm King

Then, you’ll drive around the lake quickly to get to the trailhead for Marymere Falls. This is the same starting point for Mount Storm King; you’ll walk on a relatively flat trail for 0.5 miles until you get to the Storm King Trailhead.

Now all in all, this is about a 4 mile out-and-back trail and will take you anywhere from 3-5 hours to complete. You will be rewarded with these stunning views at the very top:

HOWEVER!! This has to be one of the hardest (if not THE hardest) trails I have ever done. It is straight up hill for 2 miles, which took us about 2 hours.

And not to mention I think my quads are still sore…over a week later haha!

Also, the very last part of the hike is not maintained and is a series of 6 ropes along a steep rocky trail on the side of a cliff. Sorry to be dramatic, but for some reason once I got to this section just was not feeling comfortable enough attempting it and so I sat on the rocks and waited for my sister to get back down.

Definitely do not push yourself if you are feeling tired, scared, uncomfortable, etc at the end of the hike. It is not worth it and Search and Rescue operations are not uncommon on the Mount Storm King Trail.

While I was there I didn’t see anyone having issues going up or coming back down, but definitely good to be prepared.

2:30 PM: Marymere Falls

When you finally make it back down, you can continue along the Marymere Falls trail. This is 1.8 miles out-and-back and is an easy trail to see the waterfall.

It is flat for the most part, except at the end to actually view the waterfall so if your legs are totally dead, maybe skip it.

This will take you less than an hour, and then you’ll be back at your car!

4:00 PM: Sol Duc Falls

If you still have a bit of energy left, stop by Sol Duc Falls on your way back. It’s about a 30 minute drive from Mount Storm King and there are also ~hot springs~ here where you can finally relax and rest your feet!

Sol Duc Falls trail is a 1.8 mile out-and-back, easy trail that will take you only about an hour.

5:00 PM: Sol Duc Hot Springs

Then (finally) head to the hot springs to relax!! You can get a nice dinner and a soak in the hot springs at Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort.

They have a few different pools at different temperatures, and admission is pretty affordable. I’d recommend booking in advance because they can fill up, especially during busier seasons.

Day 3: Beaches

Ahh finally a relaxing day where you can sleep in a bit and chill more, and beach hop! Again, make sure you check the webcams before heading out for the day to make sure the weather is cooperating.

For the Olympic National Park beach itinerary, I’m going to leave time stamps off and you can just pick and choose, or explore them all at your leisure. They’re listed in order of Northernmost beach to Southernmost beach.

You really can’t go wrong!

Shi-Shi Beach

This one takes some effort to get to, but is so worth it! You’ll get views of the rugged coastline, really cool sea stacks, and the most insane sunset views.

Just be prepared for a longer hike and muddy trail. I would recommend bringing waterproof shoes!

Hole-in-the-Wall From Rialto Beach

This beach walk is super cool; it’s a 3.3 mile out-and-back walk along the coast that will take you about an hour.

It’s not technically a “trail” so you will follow the shore past massive driftwood and crashing waves until you reach the Hole in the Wall rock formation.

Go at low tide so you can explore the tide pools and walk all the way through!

Second Beach

This is the closest beach to Forks and one of the prettiest beaches there. There’s a short forest hike down and then boom, you’re on this wide open beach with crazy rock formations.

Ruby Beach

Easy access and gorgeous views – we actually tried to come here but it was cloudy. But still the combo of sea stacks, black sand, and driftwood everywhere is insane.

It’s one of the more popular spots, but totally worth a stop (especially for photos).

Kalaloch Beach

I would recommend stopping here to see the famous Tree of Life. Apparently it looks like it’s defying gravity!

It’s an easy one to swing by if you’re driving along the coast.

What To Pack For Olympic National Park

Here’s my list of things you might not usually think to pack that you will definitely need on your trip to Olympic National Park:

Comfortable hiking boots: prepare for lots of walking.
Cooler: use this to pack lunch, snacks and lots of extra water – remember to fill it with ice packs!
Portable charger: especially if you’re using for phone for directions, it can lose battery quickly and you’ll need a way to keep your phone charged. This one is my favorite!
Sunscreen: hopefully you’re packing this on all of your trips, but wanted to call it out specifically since you’ll be out all day in the sun.
Paper maps: this is optional, but can come in super handy if you lose cell service.
Layers: temperatures can start out cool in the morning, and progressively get warmer throughout the day. You’ll want to wear light layers that you can put on / take off as needed.
Water bottle: again, something you should always have but definitely when you are out hiking all day. The most dangerous thing would be to be dehydrated.

Kauai Travel Guide: Everything You Need To Know

Kauai is one of the most stunning places on Earth, from its sandy beaches to jaw-dropping cliffs, every place you visit will take your breath away! It’s definitely the most remote Hawaiian island, and best spot to escape the real world.

This Kauai Travel Guide will help you plan your trip to Kauai, with recommendations for the best things to do, where to stay, where to eat, and how to get around.

Did you know about 97% of Kauai is undeveloped? This makes it so peaceful on the island, and feels like you truly get to disconnect from the rest of the world, and connect with all the natural beauty there.

Things to do and see

1. Nā Pali Coast

Seeing the Nā Pali Coast should be the top priority when you come to visit Kauai. It is absolutely stunning and my biggest regret is not doing a boat tour to see the coast.

You have a couple options to explore the Nā Pali Coast: hike Nā Pali Coast State Wilderness Park, take a boat tour, and/or take a helicopter tour.

Compare the top boat and helicopter tour options:

The most popular trail to hike the Nā Pali Coast is the Kalalau Trail. Although AllTrails says this is a 20 mile roundtrip hike, you can reduce this by hiking just to Hanakapiai Beach (4 miles roundtrip), or to Hanakapiai Falls (8 miles roundtrip).

Please note that you will need a hiking reservation to do any of the hikes you choose. Also keep in mind that this hike is pretty challenging, and I would be extra cautious if you’re visiting in rainy season, or if it just rained in the previous few days.

We visited Kauai in May, and skipped the hike as it had been raining the week before we arrived, causing the hike to be a lot muddier and more slippery.

2. Waimea Canyon State Park

If you’re nervous about attempting the Nā Pali Coast hike, then you should absolutely visit Waimea Canyon State Park. This is known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific” and offers stunning views of Nā Pali Coast, without the hike.

We drove up to the Kalalau Lookout, and the Pu’u O Kila Lookout, both of which give you jaw-dropping views of the coast alongside the ocean. It can sometimes be cloudy and overcast throughout the day – I suggest bringing a book or something to do and waiting at the lookout for a while until the clouds clear.

Make sure you download Offline Google Maps for Kauai before you head out; there is not much cell service throughout the park. You can also get this Waimea Canyon driving tour app to do a self guided tour that will give you turn-by-turn directions, information on what to look for and where to explore.

3. Kīlauea Lighthouse

This is one of the most beautiful lighthouses I have ever seen! The lighthouse itself is closed, but you can stop by to check out the visitor center to learn more about the wildlife refuge and the lighthouse.

There is a $10 entry fee to the parking lot, and it can get busy so I would recommend booking your reservation in advance. Otherwise, you can get a great view from the parking lot above.

4. Queen’s Bath

Queen’s Bath is on the North Shore by Hanalei, and is a cool natural tide pool carved into the rocks. I would recommend stopping by here if it’s on your way, or if you’re staying on the North Shore!

5. Zipline over Kauai

This has to be one of the most fun options to see the island – by zip lining over the jungle canopy, with the option to go hands-free and try fun stunts like flying superhero-style. This 8-line course near Koloa also includes a scenic snack break among the eucalyptus trees.

6. Tour a Chocolate Farm

If you’re a chocolate lover (or just want a fun and unique experience), don’t skip a chocolate tour while you’re in Kauai!

There are a couple great options: one at Lydgate Farms, where you’ll taste fresh cacao fruit, tropical goodies, and learn how chocolate is made from bean to bar. The other is at Princeville Botanical Gardens, where you’ll explore lush gardens, sample raw cacao and single-origin chocolates from around the world, and discover how chocolate is grown and processed.

Both are super fun, educational, and (most importantly) delicious!

Where to stay

Kauai is a pretty small island, so regardless of where you stay you can really explore the whole island. My two favorite areas are Poipu Beach and Princeville / Hanalei Bay; both of these areas will take you a bit farther away from the airport and to some of the most beautiful beaches ever.

North Shore (Hanalei Bay, Princeville)

Hanalei Bay is located on the North Shore and has arguably the better beaches and natural beauty of Kauai. However, because of this you will likely be paying a bit more for your accomodations.

Luxury: 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay

If you’re looking to splurge, this is the place. 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay is a luxury, eco-friendly resort with seriously stunning views of the mountains and ocean.

It’s designed to blend into the landscape, and everything feels super peaceful and intentional, from the farm-to-table dining to the dreamy infinity pool. Perfect for a wellness-focused getaway or a romantic stay on the North Shore.

Mid-Range: Hanalei Bay Resort

Hanalei Bay Resort offers a relaxed, condo-style experience with stunning views of Hanalei Bay. While it’s not a full-service hotel, it provides spacious accommodations with kitchenettes, making it ideal for longer stays or those seeking a homey feel.

Amenities include multiple pools, tennis courts, and easy access to the beach via a short walk or golf cart ride. It’s a great base for exploring the North Shore’s beaches, hiking trails, and the charming town of Hanalei.

Budget: Makai Club Resort

If you’re looking for something more low-key and budget-friendly on the North Shore, Makai Club Resort is a great pick. The condo-style units have full kitchens, laundry, and plenty of space to spread out, which makes it perfect for longer stays or families.

It’s not directly on the beach, but you’re just a quick drive from Hanalei and tons of amazing beaches. Plus, there’s a pool, hot tub, and BBQ area for relaxing after a day of exploring.

South Shore (Poipu Beach)

Poipu Beach is on the South Shore, is a bit more budget-friendly, and is closer to Waimea Canyon State Park. This is where I stayed the first time I visited Kauai and we absolutely loved it!

Luxury: Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa

If you want a classic, full-on resort vibe with tons of amenities, the Grand Hyatt is an amazing choice. It’s huge, with gorgeous gardens, multiple pools (including a lazy river and waterslide!), and a beautiful beach just steps away.

There’s a spa, a bunch of great restaurants, and even activities for kids if you’re traveling as a family. Basically, everything you need for a fun, all-in-one stay on the south shore.

Mid-Range: Ko’a Kea Resort

If you want a chill, romantic spot right on Poipu Beach, Ko’a Kea is the spot for you. It’s adults-only, boutique, oceanfront, and just feels really relaxing without being too big or busy.

The rooms are comfy and stylish, and there’s a great restaurant onsite plus a spa if you want to treat yourself. Perfect for couples or anyone who wants easy beach access and a peaceful vibe on the south shore.

This is where we stayed for our anniversary and absolutely loved it!

Budget: Prince Kuhio Resort

If you want a simple, no-fuss spot right near the beach without breaking the bank, Prince Kuhio Resort is a solid choice. The condos have full kitchens and lanais, so it feels like a little home away from home.

There’s a pool and BBQ area, plus you’re super close to some great beaches and restaurants. Perfect if you want to be on the South Shore but keep things chill and affordable.

Where to eat and drink

1. Koloa Fish Market

Koloa Fish Market has amazing, fresh poke bowls with generous portions and reasonable prices.

2. Beach House Restaurant

Beach House Restaurant is perfect for a fancy dinner where you can get dressed up and watch the sunset over the ocean. The service was amazing and the food was delicious!

3. Big Monster Sushi & Thai

This was a convenient spot right by the airport! We got takeout sushi and thai to eat in our hotel room, and it was incredible.

4. Little Fish Coffee

We were able to walk here in the mornings from our hotel to grab coffee and bagels – it was so convenient! However, the line in the mornings does get insanely long so if you’re on a time crunch I would recommend ordering ahead.

5. Red Salt

This was the restaurant at our hotel, the Ko’a Kea Resort, and it was actually really good. The prices were a bit high, but that is to be expected in Hawaii and I felt that the food was cooked to perfection.

How to get around Kauai

By Car

If you want to explore Kauai on your own terms, renting a car is pretty much a must. Public transportation is limited, and the island’s best beaches, hikes, and towns are spread out.

Just keep in mind that rental cars can be pricey and in high demand, especially during peak seasons, so book early! The roads are mostly two-lane highways winding through mountains and along the coast, so take it easy and enjoy the views.

We didn’t have any issues with parking, but some areas like Hanalei can get busy.

Kauai does have Uber and taxis, but they’re not as common or reliable as on the mainland. Depending on where you are, it can sometimes be hard to get a ride quickly, especially in more remote areas or late at night.

If you don’t want to rent a car, I suggest planning ahead; book rides in advance when possible, or check with your hotel about shuttle services.

For short trips in towns like Kapaa or Poipu, taxis can work, but for anything more adventurous or off-the-beaten-path, a car rental gives you way more freedom.

By Walking / Running

Since so much of Kauai is undeveloped, there are not a lot of long running or walking trails, besides the hikes in the state & national parks. I did not go for a run during my time in Kauai – I do think it is possible if you really want to, but you may find yourself on the actual road instead of a sidewalk.

By Bike

If you’re into biking, Kauai offers some pretty amazing rides – but FYI, it’s not always easy. Poipu is a good place to start if you want a longer ride, and the highway on the west side generally has decent shoulders. Avoid Poipu Road for getting to the highway, it’s narrow with fast traffic and some gnarly potholes.

The back roads around Kalaheo are great for punchy climbs and pretty views, and you can even cruise the golf course paths there for a fun mid-ride break. On the east side, the bike paths are flatter and shorter, good for a relaxed ride along the coast, especially if you catch a tailwind.

If you’re feeling strong, the Waimea area has some serious climbs and rolling hills that are tough but rewarding. Just watch out for gravel patches on the descents. Overall, Kauai’s roads aren’t full of bike lanes, so you need to be confident sharing the road with cars and handling some wind.

One thing to keep in mind: water stops and bike shops are sparse, so bring extra water and plan ahead. Locals recommend grabbing water at tourist spots or shops with outdoor counters since it’s hot out there.

If you’re used to riding urban or highway roads, you’ll probably be fine, but if you usually stick to bike paths, Kauai will be a challenge, and a beautiful one at that. Just ride smart, be prepared, and enjoy some incredible views!

By Metro / Bus

Kauai does have a public bus system called The Kauai Bus that drives around the island. It’s a budget-friendly option if you’re not renting a car, but keep in mind the buses don’t run super frequently, and service hours can be limited, especially on weekends and holidays.

The bus is best if you’re staying in town or planning to hop between a few main spots, but it’s not the most convenient way to explore the whole island since stops can be spread out and schedules aren’t always easy to navigate. If you want to give it a try, plan your day around the bus times and be ready for a slower pace.

Philippines Travel Guide: How To Spend 1 Week In Palawan

Known for its crystal-clear waters, dramatic limestone cliffs, and lush jungle landscapes, Palawan is a breathtaking island province in the Philippines. It is one of the most beautiful places I have visited on Earth.

I would definitely suggest going for at least 2 weeks; there are so many islands and unreal places I didn’t get to visit with just 1 week in the Philippines.

However, I am still so thankful I went and will forever be wanting to go back! So definitely add it to your list, and make an effort to visit, regardless of how much time you have to come.

This Philippines Travel Guide will help you plan a 1 week trip to Palawan, with recommendations for the best things to do, where to stay, where to eat, and how to get around.

With only 1 week in the Philippines, the breakdown of how I spent my time looked like this:

2 days – Coron
3 days – Coron to El Nido island hopping expedition
1 day – El Nido
1 day – Coron

I really wish I had had more time there, because I didn’t get to spend as much time as I wanted in El Nido. However, since I was flying in and out of Coron, I spent more time there by default.

I’ll share more about the island hopping experience, and everything I did during my time in Palawan to help you maximize your time!

Budgeting for the Philippines

When it comes to budgeting for the Philippines, the US Dollar will go far. Here’s what I budgeted per day in each category:

Lodging: $50/night (I wanted a private room at a nicer hotel/hostel but I’ve seen hostel rates as low as $7/night)

Transit: $5/day

Activities: $20/day + $350 for the Expedition

Coron to El Nido Island Hopping Expedition

The Coron to El Nido (or vice versa) island hopping expedition is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will take you to various remote islands throughout the Philippines that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to visit.

This is a great alternative to flying between the two islands, or taking the direct ferry, if you have the time and budget during your visit to the Philippines.

There are lots of boat tour companies that are constantly running these island hopping expeditions in either direction, and for a variety of durations. The most popular companies are Big Dream Boatman, Tao, Keelooma, El Nido Paradise, and Buhay Isla.

If you want a luxurious experience, go with Tao. However, if you’re looking to save your money, I would just compare availability and pricing between the other companies – at the end of the day, they are all pretty similar.

The one-way tour will typically cost 18,000 – 35,000 PHP, depending on which tour company you go with and how many days you want the expedition to last.

Definitely book this as far in advance as possible. By the time I was booking my trip, just a couple weeks out, almost all of the expeditions were full so my options were limited.

I did a 3D2N (3 day, 2 night) boat expedition with Keelooma from Coron to El Nido, and would recommend the experience overall! If I did it again, I would probably go with Tao instead, just to splurge and sleep in nicer accommodations.

Day tours and excursions in Coron

I really only had time for day tours and excursions in Coron, so I will speak to the different options you have there, and which ones I did!

Each boat tour includes pick up and drop off from your hotel/hostel/airbnb (if you’re located in Coron town), and a buffet lunch! If you want to snorkel or kayak, you will either need to bring your own snorkel equipment or you can rent from your boat crew.

I booked all of my tours through Get Your Guide so I knew ahead of time what I would be doing, but you can easily book excursions once you’re there as well! Usually they’ll accept new bookings up until 8pm or so the night prior.

1. Coron Super Ultimate Tour

If you only have time for one tour, make it the Coron Super Ultimate Tour! This will take you to 7 iconic spots like Kayangan Lake, Twin Lagoon, Barracuda Lake and more, where you can snorkel and explore.

Every tour also includes a buffet lunch!

If you have a higher budget and want to tailor your tour, I recommend splurging on a private tour. This will allow you to choose what you really want to spend time on, so you can maximize your trip!

2. Tour A

If you want to spend a bit more time at the most popular destinations, then I would recommend Tour A. You’ll visit Kayangan Lake, CYC Beach, Sunset Beach and Las Islas de Coral and get to really enjoy each spot.

This is the tour I took my first day in Coron, and I absolutely LOVED it! I also spent an extra few pesos to get a kayak for the day, with another solo traveler, so that I could really explore the lakes.

The kayak rental isn’t necessary, but was definitely a nice way to float in the water and see everything!

3. Tour B

The second most popular tour is Tour B, where you’ll get to visit Twin Lagoon, Barracuda Lake, Coral Garden, Skeleton Wreck, and Atuayan Beach, and spend extra time at each.

This is the tour I took my last day in Coron, and I loved this one as well! If you have multiple days, I would definitely recommend taking both Tour A and Tour B separately, so you can spend more time at each spot.

4. Bea Beauty Salon & Spa

This is not an excursion, but if you’re like me – after all of the snorkeling and swimming around in the lakes, my hair needed some TLC and I honestly was scared to try to wash it and comb it out myself.

So I spent an afternoon at Bea Beauty Salon & Spa getting a massage and hair mask treatment!

This was honestly a big highlight of my trip – my hair was sooo smooth after. It cost me about $20 USD total and was so worth it.

Where to stay in Palawan

When visiting Palawan, you have a good variety of affordable lodging options! This trip, I stayed in a combination of hotels and hostels, so will walk you through each of your options.

Hotels

Given that the USD is pretty strong in the Philippines, I would recommend staying in a hotel if you can afford it. It will still be relatively cheap, and you can get a really cool room at a nice hotel!

In Coron I stayed at the Coron Bancuang Mansion, which was super nice – it has a pool and breakfast included.

Hostels

If you’re looking for a more social option, and especially if you’re a solo traveler, I would recommend staying in a hostel!

In Coron, the popular hostels that I’d recommend are Hop Hostel and the Outpost Hostel.

In El Nido, the popular hostels that I’d recommend are the Frendz Hostel and the Outpost Beach Hostel. I stayed at the Frendz Hostel in a private room and really loved it.

Airbnbs

If you’re traveling with your family or a larger group, renting an Airbnb is a great option. I would recommend renting one close to the town center if you want to go on boat tours, so that the tour operators can pick you up for free.

Where to eat in Coron

1. Om’s Thai

You know I can never resist a good Thai food spot, and Om’s Thai was so good I went there twice!

2. El Kuvo

This was the cutest spot that my (new!) friend found and we tried it out! I had the refreshing watermelon & lychee salad and OMG it was soo good – I would go back just for that!

3. Prince Wonton Restaurant

The place to go for wontons and noodles! It’s very cheap (like $3 for your whole meal) – if you’re hungry though you might want to order two plates!

4. AE’s Delights

This spot is open late night and is perfect for snacking on siopao (steamed buns) or churros!

5. Mama Café

Mama café has refreshing smoothies, salads, sandwiches and other brunch foods. Everything I ate here was delicious!

How to get around Palawan

By Walking

This is the easiest way to explore each city! The streets are narrow, and there are no sidewalks so you basically just walk along the side of the road!

There are tons of shops and restaurants lining the center of the towns, so it’s really fun to walk around and pop in and out of each place.

By Trike

This is the most common way to get around town quickly! Each ride usually cost around 200 – 300 PHP, or $3-5 USD.

I even took a trike to get to El Nido airport from my hostel, which was a bit of a long ride in one of these but we made it there safe and sound!

By Car

There are no Ubers or Taxis in Palawan. Check out my 10 Essential Travel Tips for the Philippines for everything you need to know about airport transfers by bus.

I would not recommend renting a car in Palawan. There are hardly any places to park a car, the streets are really narrow, and with pedestrians walking in the street I would personally be terrified to drive through town here.

10 Things You Need To Know Before Visiting The Philippines

Sharing the essential Philippines travel tips that everyone should know before they visit! I only visited Palawan, so these tips will be geared towards visiting there.

I booked my trip pretty last minute, and honestly didn’t really know what to expect on my trip to the Philippines. I wasn’t able to find a ton of resources on travel, so wanted to share my experience going to the beautiful islands of Palawan.

1. Safety in Palawan

To be honest, before I left for the Philippines I was hearing mixed thoughts on how safe it is to visit. Firstly, before you go anywhere, I always recommend reading the US Travel Advisory for that country so you are aware of anything going on.

I experienced no safety issues – I visited Palawan as a solo female traveler, and found the people to be very welcoming and friendly. I met a ton of other solo travelers around town and on many of the boat excursions!

Based on my experience, I would recommend Palawan as a solo travel destination – there are so many great ways to meet fellow travelers and socialize. While also feeling safe to walk around and explore on your own!

2. There are no Ubers or Taxis

Instead, there are these trikes you can take to get around the islands:

The trike rides cost about 200 – 300 PHP, depending on how far you are going.

There are also group shuttle busses that are typically used for airport transfers, and boat expeditions to get you down to the boat docks.

I would highly recommend reaching out to your hotel/Airbnb before you land to make sure that they reserve a spot for you on the shuttle bus to pick you up from the airport!

3. Cash is king

You will need a lot of cash (Philippine Pesos) on your trip to the Philippines. Most restaurants, hotels, activities, shops, etc only take cash, and all prefer cash even if they take credit cards.

There are ATMs located all over, and also right at the airport when you land. Make sure you get a ton of cash out of the ATMs!

I actually racked up quite a few ATM fees because I didn’t properly account for what I’d need. I’d recommend either taking out the max each time, or actually figuring out how much money you’ll need for your whole trip and budgeting accordingly.

I would also recommend getting as many small bills as possible – your hotel or convenience stores should be able to help exchange your bigger bills.

A lot of my trike drivers didn’t have change (or weren’t willing to give me change) so I ended up paying a lot more than I should have, just because I didn’t have small enough bills.

4. Tipping is not expected

However, I would recommend adding a small tip for stellar service (50 – 100 Pesos). It goes a long way for the locals.

5. There are no sidewalks

Yep, you heard me! You just sort of walk along the side of the street like this:

This took me a minute to get used to honestly, but you’ll soon realize that everyone else is doing it, so the drivers are used to it!

As a side note, I swear these drivers have the best spatial awareness. I would personally not recommend renting a car here!

6. Pack (and wear) a ton of sunscreen

The sun is so so hot in the Philippines! I was constantly wearing 50+ SPF and STILL got super tan!

Luckily no burn though; major shoutout to my Blue Lizard sunscreen. I put that stuff on religiously twice a day and did not burn once.

I would highly recommend packing and bringing sunscreen from home. Almost everyone who bought their sunscreen in the Philippines burnt – I think they have different standards and people said that the sunscreen they bought there just didn’t work as well.

7. Always wear a life jacket when you're in the water

I wanted to reiterate how important it is to always wear/bring a life jacket when you’re in the water! Regardless of your swim level!

I almost always had my life jacket on, but if I took it off to float or tan, I had it right next to me or hooked on my wrist.

This is something the tour guides started enforcing as a result of a couple really unfortunate incidences, I don’t wanna scare you so you can google the news stories on your own.

8. Bring lots of mosquito bug spray

One of my biggest fears was getting bitten by a mosquito and getting dengue fever on my trip, so I packed a ton of bug spray – specifically this Picaridin Insect Repellent Spray.

I did a lot of research on which bug spray to bring because I normally get eaten alive when the sun starts to set. But I sprayed this stuff on me constantly, and definitely think it worked because I only got a few bug bites and did not get dengue fever!

9. You will never be hungry

Filipino food is pretty dense and they serve you these huge buffets of delicious food on all the tours!

I also heard from a lot of travelers I met, that they think the Philippines is one of the only Southeast Asian countries to “do American food well.” I haven’t been to too much of SEA yet to personally verify this, but did have a burger one day that was really good!

10. You're never going to want to leave

The water in the Philippines was some of the most unbelievably blue waters I’ve ever seen. The people were all so friendly and welcoming and instantly made me feel right at home.

I was actually so sad that I didn’t have more time to explore more of the islands here; the biggest mistake I made was definitely coming here for ONLY a week.

Amsterdam Travel Guide: Everything You Need To Know

Amsterdam is so stunning, and a must-see for any European travel bucket list! It was built on a marsh, which is why they built the iconic canals all throughout the city.

I visited in the spring, which is the perfect time to see the tulip fields in full bloom. Tulip season runs from mid-March through early May.

Things to do and see in Amsterdam

1. Canal Cruise

I would highly recommend starting your trip with a boat cruise around the canals! This way you’ll get to see the city from the water, and also learn more about the history of Amsterdam.

We booked an Open Boat Cruise with Flagship Amsterdam so that we could really see all around us. If the weather is nice out, I would 100% recommend doing an open boat tour – otherwise your view will be blocked by the top of the boat.

2. Anne Frank House

The Anne Frank House is a must-see when you are in Amsterdam. There’s a free audio tour that does a great job explaining everything, the original bookcase is still there, and you can actually walk through the secret annex which is wild.

It’s very moving experience and really puts things into perspective.

And make sure to book your tickets in advance on the official website. Ticket sales open 6 weeks in advance, on Tuesday at 10 AM Amsterdam time.

What do I do if all of the Anne Frank House tickets are sold out?

Do not panic!! This actually happened to me, but I was able to get tickets still on the exact day and time I wanted to go. There are two ways to get tickets to the Anne Frank House, even if they are all sold out:

Download Ticketswap. This is only legitimate place where people resell tickets for the Anne Frank House. I recommend setting an alert for the days/times you want to go, so that you will be notified right away if tickets are available.

I had this app downloaded for 4 weeks and unfortunately was always too late to jumping on available tickets. They will literally get scooped up in less than half a second!
Set your alarm for Tuesday at 10 AM Amsterdam time THE WEEK before your visit. The museum releases additional tickets the week before, for all days and times.

This is how i scored my tickets! When I went on the website, there was a bit of a queue to get in, so I recommend entering the site ~10-15 minutes before 10 AM CET. However, I had zero issues getting tickets and there were tons available.

3. Keukenhof

The Keukenhof Tulip Garden is open from mid-March to early May, depending on tulip season. It is so stunning and you can see hundreds of different types of tulips, it’s truly amazing.

Make sure to reserve your tickets online in advance.

We purchased the combined Keukenhof ticket + KeukenhofBuzz bus ride, which made getting to Keukenhof really easy. We hopped on the shuttle bus in downtown Amsterdam, which brought us straight to Keukenhof.

The busses were running back and forth constantly, and we had no issues getting back to our hotel at night.

Can I see the rows of tulip fields here, like you see on Instagram?

This is the biggest mistake I made on my trip to Amsterdam. I thought that you’d be able to see the tulip fields at the Keukenhof Botanical Garden, but this is incorrect.

If you want to get your Instagram-worthy photos, you’ll need to also book an entry ticket at the Tulip Barn or at the Tulipfarm De Tulperij.

This is just 5 minutes away from the botanical garden, and absolutely worth the visit. If I could go back and do it over again, I wish I had known to book a ticket here!

Don’t get me wrong, the botanical garden is still worth the visit, but wanted to share my mistake so you can learn from it!

4. Vondelpark

I recommend ending your night with people watching and the sunset at Vondelpark. It’s so pretty and peaceful, and THE place to be on a sunny day.

Alternatively, you should absolutely walk or bike through here during the day. When I was here in May, the weather was perfect, and it felt like everyone was at this park, it was so lively and fun!

5. De 9 Straatjes (the 9 Streets)

This is a popular area with tons of designer boutique shops, vintage stores, cafes and more. It spans across a couple canals and is worth wandering for a few hours, especially if you love to shop!

I didn’t realize that Amsterdam would have so much good shopping, and I actually ended up buying a ton more here than I did in Paris!

6. Rijksmuseum

The Rijksmuseum is a must for all history and art lovers! You’ll find world-famous artwork by iconic Dutch artists like Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Vermeer on display in the museum.

I recommend booking your tickets online in advance so that you don’t have to wait in a line when you arrive. The museum itself is huge – you could easily spend all day here.

7. Albert Cuypstraat (Market)

Albert Cuypstraat is a daily outdoor market with tons of food, clothing, souvenir, accessory and other stalls. It’s open every day from 9:30 AM – 5 PM except Sundays.

I recommend coming here hungry and trying popular Dutch delicacies, like stroopwafel and herring. You can get the famous Rudi’s Original Stroopwafels here!

Where to stay in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is a relatively small city, compared to other European cities. I think this makes it easy to get around the whole city, regardless of where you’re staying.

However, I’ll share my two favorite neighborhoods to help narrow down your choices for your trip to Amsterdam.

Museum Quarter

The Museum Quarter is, you guessed it, where all of the popular museums are located, like the Rijksmuseum, the Stedelijk Museum and the Van Gogh Museum.

It’s also located right next to Vondelpark, which is a great place for your morning jog or sunset at night!

We stayed at the Amsterdam Marriott Hotel, which was incredible and truly made our stay. Check out this sunrise view from our room!

I would recommend staying here if hitting all of the museums is high on your list, and also being more centrally located to everything in the city.

I felt like we were right in the middle, and everything was a short (under 20 minutes) walk away.

Jordaan

The Jordaan is a really cute neighborhood in the canals with lots of shopping and restaurants. This is where the 9 Streets and the Anne Frank House Museum are located as well.

I would recommend staying here if you want to be able to walk right out of your hotel and be on the canal! There’s a ton of great restaurants around here as well.

Where to eat in Amsterdam

Bakeries

1. Melly’s Cookies Bar and StroopWafels

This is two separate shops – one dedicated to StroopWafels, and the other serving delicious cookies, cakes, pies and more.

This is a must if you have a sweet tooth!

2. Sea Salt & Chocolate

Sea Salt & Chocolate is an amazing little cake shop right around the corner from the Albert Cuyp Market. I had a slice of their vegan chocolate cake and it was SO good!

3. Rudi’s Original Stroopwafels

Rudi’s is a must. Stop by their old-fashioned stall at the Albert Cuyp Market for the full experience.

4. NU koffie & delicatessen

Disclaimer because this was recommended to me but I wasn’t able to stop by, but it has amazing reviews on Google and is known for their coffee!

5. Louren’s

Louren’s is the spot to get a crookie – a cross between of a croissant and a gooey chocolate chip cookie.

6. Madame Croissant

Madame Croissant is another spot to get a crookie, or another one of their delicious sweet & savory croissants!

7. Van Stapele Koekmakerij

You will likely have to wait in line for one of Van Stapele’s cookies, but they are 100% worth the wait.

Restaurants

1. Foodhallen

The Foodhallen is an upscale food court with tons of great restaurant options! I recommend coming here especially if you’re in a group and no one can decide on what they want for dinner – this has everything!

I got a poke bowl from Meneer Temaki, which was amazing, but you really can’t go wrong.

2. ABC Clubsandwich

ABC Clubsandwich is a small lunch restaurant serving sandwiches and salads! I recommend stopping here for a quick, yummy lunch while you’re shopping the 9 Streets.

3. Casa di Sergio

Casa di Sergio is an Italian restaurant located by the Rijksmuseum. You can sit outdoors on the little patio and people watch, and enjoy an amazing Italian meal.

4. Moeders

Moeders is a traditional Dutch restaurant that was recommended to us by the staff at Melly’s Cookies Bar! They serve large portions of traditional Dutch food, so it’s the perfect spot if you’re looking to try the local cuisine.

It’s a small and cozy restaurant, so make sure you make your reservation in advance, otherwise you will probably be waiting for at least an hour.

How to get around Amsterdam

By Biking

Had to start off with the quintessential mode of transportation for the Dutch! You will see bikes everywhere all over Amsterdam – this is the most popular way to get around the city.

There are dedicated bike lanes on every street, and cyclists are always given the right of way.

Renting a bike can cost anywhere from around €10 to €20 for a day, depending on the rental company and the type of bike. I suggest looking up bike rental companies near your hotel, or asking your concierge for their recommendation.

By Walking / Running

Like I said earlier, Amsterdam is a smaller city so it’s really easy to get around by walking.

However, you will really need to pay attention to your surroundings while you’re walking around though, and especially when you’re crossing the street. Cyclists have the right of way, and are often going by quickly.

I felt like trying to cross the street was like playing a game of real-life Frogger; there are 2 bike lanes, 2 car lanes, and 1 metro lane, making it a challenge to cross.

To stay active, I would definitely suggest going for a run in the morning to explore and see more of the city! Especially through Vondelpark; there were so many people out and about in the park.

By Metro / Bus

The public transit in Amsterdam is a fast and efficient way to travel around the city, especially for longer distances.

Each ride is €3.20, which is pretty expensive in my opinion, so I would recommend reserving Metro use for when you want to leave the city center.

If you want to hit a lot of major attractions and take the metro, I recommend looking into an I amsterdam City Card. This will give you access to all major highlights and more than 70 museums, city-wide public transport, a canal cruise and bicycle rent for one flat fee.

By Car

I found that Ubers and Taxis were available in Amsterdam, but I often had to wait at least 5 minutes for one to arrive. They were also pretty expensive, compared to other European cities I’ve visited.

I would not recommend renting a car in Amsterdam. There are hardly any places to park a car, the streets are really narrow, and many are alongside canals.

If you plan to road trip around the Netherlands, I would definitely rent a car for that, but pick it up when you are leaving Amsterdam or drop it off before you get to Amsterdam.

Glacier National Park: The Best 2 Day Weekend Itinerary

Glacier National Park is one of the most beautiful national parks I have ever visited! The stunning glacial waters are just out of this world – I’ve never seen anything like them.

You must add Glacier National Park to your bucket list if it isn’t there already! I promise you one visit won’t be enough – you’ll leave wanting to come back.

I would recommend going for at least 3 days if you are able to, but this ultimate 2-day weekend itinerary will help you plan out your trip to maximize all of your time there. Since hiking is a must in Glacier, make sure you’re prepared with the right gear.

What You Should Know Before Visiting Glacier National Park

1. Make your reservations online in advance

Starting in 2025, you will need a timed entry vehicle reservation for the west side of Going-to-the-Sun Road and North Fork. These can only be secured at Recreation.gov, or using their mobile app.

Tickets are released 4 months in advance and sell out REALLY fast. They will also release some additional reservations the day before, if you aren’t able to secure a reservation.

2. If you don't score a reservation, don't worry

Not all roads require a timed entry vehicle reservation. And the ones that do, you are able to freely enter the road after 3 PM.

3. Be sure to also buy your Glacier National Park Pass before your visit

While there’s an infinite number of the National Park passes, it’s helpful to get your pass before your visit. This will help you to maximize your time in the park, instead of waiting on a long line to buy your pass when you arrive.

4. Parking lots fill up quickly but cars are always leaving

We got up early each morning to get to the park by 7 AM to really maximize our time there. We didn’t have issues with parking, except at Logan Pass since we went there later in the day.

However, this is the largest parking lot, so we were able to snag a spot after only about 10 minutes of circling around the lot.

Be prepared to be aggressive with grabbing the first spot you can find!

5. There is not reliable cell reception in Glacier National Park

While you may get lucky and find a pocket of cell reception, or be able to use a hotel’s WiFi, plan as if you won’t have any cell service at all in the park.

I recommend downloading Offline Google Maps for the entire area of Glacier National Park before your trip. Feel free to DM me on Instagram if you aren’t sure how to do this and I can help you!

Also make sure to download any road reservations, park passes, etc before you enter the park.

6. Stay nearby the park entrance

My sister and I stayed in an Airbnb just 15 minutes away from the park entrance, and it was the best idea ever.

This means you can be one of the first to get into the park each morning. It is especially crucial if you weren’t able to get a road reservation, since you can enter the park without one before 7 AM.

Day 1

For Day 1, you will need a Going-To-The-Sun Road reservation to access these trails between 7 AM and 3 PM.

This link will take you to the official Recreation.gov website to make your reservation.

8:00 AM : Trail of the Cedars & Avalanche Lake

Start your trip strong with an easy-to-moderate walk through the Trail of the Cedars, and continue on to Avalanche Lake.

It’s about a 5.9 mile out-and-back trail, and estimated to take 2 1/2 hours to complete, according to AllTrails.

However Avalanche Lake is about 2/3 of the way into the hike so if you want an easier hike, you can stop once you get to the lake and turn back!

The water is actually so insane – it’s this perfectly blue/green emerald color, and the backdrop with the mountains and the trees makes it the most scenic trail.

12:00 PM : Logan Pass & Hidden Lake Overlook

Once you finish the Avalanche Lake hike, drive up to Logan Pass to hike the Hidden Lake Overlook!

This is a 2.7 mile out-and-back trail with a pretty steep elevation gain, so prepare accordingly! Once you reach the top though, you’ll be met with incredible views like this:

You can also see a ton of mountain goats on this hike! We saw a whole little family just passing through the mountains, it was really cool.

This is a pretty popular trail, so prepare for it to be busy – which unfortunately includes the parking lot.

3:30 PM : Red Rock Point

Red Rock Point is a little overlook we stumbled upon on our drive out of Glacier National Park! It’s absolutely worth adding to your itinerary and stopping by.

It’s an easy 5-10 minute walk out from the road to see these cascading waterfalls with super light blue water.

6:00 PM : Great Bear Cafe

After all of this hiking and sightseeing, I imagine you’ve got to be pretty hungry! So, we’re going to exit Glacier National Park and head into the little nearby town for some dinner.

I recommend going to the Great Bear Cafe; they’ve got Montana classics like biscuits and gravy, and elk and buffalo burgers! This was the perfect stop after a long day.

7:30 PM : Eddie’s Cafe

Once you’re filled up on dinner, head back into Glacier National Park for some huckleberry ice cream at Eddie’s Cafe!

You’ll notice that huckleberry is a really popular ingredient in a lot of dishes in Montana, especially around Glacier National Park. It’s a wild berry, primarily harvested in the Rocky Mountains and is so delicious!

While you’re here, you can also walk down to the water at Lake McDonald, where you’ll be able to see the iconic rainbow rocks:

Seeing these was on my bucket list for such a long time, and was well worth the visit!

If you have more than 2 days in Glacier National Park, I recommend spending a day driving up to Bowman Lake. To access this lake, you will need to make a timed entry vehicle reservation on Recreation.gov at 8 AM on the Saturday before.

This is separate from the other road reservations, and the Glacier National Park Pass.

Day 2

For Day 2, you will need a Going-To-The-Sun Road reservation and a Many Glacier hiker shuttle service ticket to access these trails between 7 AM and 3 PM.

This link will take you to the official Recreation.gov website to make your reservation.

Please note that the Many Glacier hiker shuttle service is new as of 2025 due to construction.

8:00 AM : Logan Creek

This is not an official “stop,” but we spontaneously pulled over on the side of the road here to take these INCREDIBLE photos. I mean, just look at this view!

If there’s a lot of traffic, I wouldn’t recommend doing this. However, if you’re here right when the park opens you will probably get lucky too and there will barely be any cars around!

9:00 AM : Grinnell Glacier Trail

Continue on to the trailhead for Grinnell Glacier Trail. This is the NUMBER ONE rated hike in Glacier National Park and it is actually so unbelievable.

According to AllTrails, it’s a 10 mile out-and-back trail that’s estimated to take you about 5 hours. However, since there was some construction going on, we actually ended up taking 7 hours and hiking 14 miles roundtrip, starting at the Many Glacier Hotel.

There is a boat tour that starts at the Many Glacier Hotel, that will cut out about 1.5 – 2 miles each leg of the hike. Tickets for this sell out really quickly, so make sure to check out the Many Glacier Hotel’s official website for tickets and the most up-to-date information.

This hike will take you past 4 lakes, with the trail starting at the Swiftcurrent Lake. Then you’ll hike along Lake Josephine, which is so stunning.

As you keep climbing higher, the water gets lighter and more shocking. You’ll then pass Grinnell Lake, which is at the bottom of a steep drop-off and has its own hiking trail, if you’re looking for something more moderate.

The trail ends at Upper Grinnell Lake, which will feel like it is SO far away. But I promise it is worth it to hike all the way to the end.

5:00 PM : Swiss Lounge @ Many Glacier Hotel

When you FINALLY make it to the end of the trail, I suggest heading into the Many Glacier Hotel and grabbing dinner at the Swiss Lounge.

We didn’t have to wait too long for a table, and the food was delicious. Not sure if that’s just because we were starving, but they have lots of great options and it’s amazing how convenient it is.

7:30 PM : Lake McDonald

If you still have a bit of energy left, stop by Lake McDonald on your way home to watch the sunset! We pulled off into one of the many little parking lots along the Going-To-The-Sun road, and sat on some rocks here.

The colors are absolutely magnificent; every part of Glacier National Park is truly so stunning.

If you’re in the mood for another sweet treat, you can stop by Eddie’s Cafe again for some ice cream!

Otherwise, head back home to get what will probably be an amazing night of sleep due to the exhaustion.

What To Pack For Glacier National Park

Here’s my list of things you might not usually think to pack that you will definitely need on your trip to Glacier National Park:

Bear Spray: our Airbnb hosts had some they let us use, but if your accommodations don’t provide any, make sure to pick some up!
Comfortable hiking boots: some of the trails were longer than we expected, so prepare for lots of walking.
Cooler: use this to pack lunch, snacks and lots of extra water – remember to fill it with ice packs!
Portable charger: especially if you’re using for phone for directions, it can lose battery quickly and you’ll need a way to keep your phone charged. This one is my favorite!
Sunscreen: hopefully you’re packing this on all of your trips, but wanted to call it out specifically since you’ll be out all day in the sun.
Paper maps: this is optional, but can come in super handy since there is no cell service in Glacier National Park.
Layers: temperatures can start out cool in the morning, and progressively get warmer throughout the day. You’ll want to wear light layers that you can put on / take off as needed.
Water bottle: again, something you should always have but definitely when you are out hiking all day. The most dangerous thing would be to be dehydrated.
